Everybody Has a Story to Tell
posted March 20, 2009 - 6:30pmWhen starting to write articles for the first time, conventional wisdom will tell you "Go with what you know". Unless are in a coma presently, you got up this morning, answered Nature's call, brushed your teeth, ate some breakfast, made the beds, did some laundry, went to work, did your job until lunch, ate lunch, restarted work, knocked off, maybe went to the bar to have a couple of beers, ate dinner, brushed your teeth again, changed into your pajamas, and went to bed. Maybe not in that order, but the point is, you did something today.
Even beyond just today, you were born somewhere. You grew up somewhere. You went to school and graduated from somewhere. You have parents, maybe some brothers and sisters, maybe you even got married. You live somewhere and have lived somewhere previously, even if you are in the same small town. Maybe you are in the military or are a veteran, which means you went to boot camp and school and traveled a bit.
Do you have pets? Do you go to the movies or watch television? Do you read the newspaper or get news online? Do you have a favorite sports team or any hobbies? What's your favorite color or food?
I don't care who you are or where you're from--you did something interesting today and can write about it. When you get writer's block and are just staring at your computer screen for what seems like an excruciatingly long time, just remember what you did today and write about that. It doesn't have to be Shakespeare's sonnets or as deep as Nietzsche's philosophy; that's not what's important.
What is important is that you realize that everybody has a story to tell. I would like to hear it.
