Exercise Benefits Your Brain
posted December 5, 2007 - 9:25amA sedentary lifestyle is not only bad for your body but it can also be detrimental to your brain. Scientists have a growing body of evidence that frequent exercise boosts the productivity of brain cells.
An eight year study on 6000 women by University of California at San Francisco shows
that women who walked regularly were less liable to suffer from age-related decline in mental function such as memory loss.
Research at Salk Institute by Professor Fred gage shows that running boosts the growth of brain cells. Another research based on health data of about 5000 senior citizens aged 65 and above shows that those who exercise frequently were less likely to face decline in mental activities and Alzheimer's disease.
Psychologist James Blumenthal points out,"We know that in general, exercise improves the heart's ability to pump blood more effectively, as well as increases the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity....It is thought that one of the reasons why the elderly – especially those with coronary artery disease or hypertension – tend to suffer some degree of cognitive decline is in part due to a reduction in blood flow to the brain."
So start exercising now for a better brain.
