Expose On Cardboard Dumplings - Was It A Hoax

Communist Party Of China (CPC) responds to expose of cardboard dumplings shown by TV station in China by declaring it a hoax and dispensing disciplinary action.

Do citizens believe it was a hoax or a statement meant to promote a more harmonious society?

Sleeping Dragons

Mythman, you are so quick with words and facile with language, but this post is not about Bush. No one man is responsible for the world situation and disposing of one man will not resolve it. I do not believe that 37% of any population anywhere believes that nuclear war is the answer to their problems, with the possible exception of some of the radical Muslim groups who have proposed using nuclear weapons to solve their perceived problems. Of course, Mao actually believed that China had sufficient population to not only survive nuclear holocaust, but to march forward afterward and take over the world. He built bunkers to protect and support 200,000 carefully selected party members to accomplish just that. Not everyone in the world thinks in the same way that we do. It behooves us to try and understand how different people think and react to situations so that we may more effectively resolve conflicts and find a common path to travel on our quest for peace. I have dealt with persons raised in other cultures whose moral and ethical basis for behaviour is quite different from mine. Lack of understanding of these differences makes transacting business or engaging in social relationships difficult to say the least. What this Chinese citizen said and the fact that the Chinese government chose to publish it is indicative of how they think. There is a duplicity in thoughts that exists under Communist regimes that is so totally different than the ethical paradigm of behaviour in our culture, and when two cultures who have radically different ethical and moral beliefs interact, there tend to be problems and misunderstandings. This was quite clear during the cold war years when we dealt repeatedly with Soviet issues of them saying one thing and doing quite another. But their entire culture was based on one set of written rules for behaviour and quite another set of rules that governed their lives, and it was considered right and proper by them to live that way. Where we feel a certain sense of guilt if we break a rule of behaviour, they were taught from childhood how to sidestep the rules, and only felt guilt over being caught. It was not considered wrong. It was how to survive withing their system. Just as the Chinese citizen did not consider it wrong for the government to lie and cover up the fraud that was being committed by the peddlers of cardboard dumplings. It was better for the lie to be put forth that it was all a hoax than to have people angry over having been fed cardboard. A more harmonious society was to be considered of higher value than the truth. Along with this went the punishment of those persons who dared publish the truth. One day the dragon will wake.... and we will have to deal with it. Let us arm ourselves with knowledge and perhaps we will not have to fight the dragon for survival. Angel

So Do We Nuke the Sleeping Dragon?

Are you one of the 37% who believe that would be the right way to go? I'm not really, but I'm considering listing myself as one of them---they may not be righteous Guardians of Life ... but they (BushBackers) do have a lot of the money. Beware The Sleeping Dragon

There were two parts of this I found most interesting. 1. The fact that the Chinese TV station had the courage to broadcast the story in the first place.... not too common in a communist regime. 2. The attitude of the "average" citizen interviewed by the government that although he did not believe that the story was a hoax, he felt that releasing the story that it was a hoax was of benefit in the promotion of a more harmonious society. It is such a different attitude and philosophy of life, to admit that "well, we don't like the truth so we are going to lie about it and the lie should be accepted because it is less trouble"....so everyone accept the lie and we will all pretend it is the truth. A society that can live by this rule is really scary. Cognitive dissonance on a gigantic scale. Beware the sleeping dragon..... he might consider you a crunchy tidbit when he awakes.

Junior high school pizza

In my junior high we all swore the pizza they made was made from cardboard. Don't think it was from China or anything, though.
