Fabulous Blog - Entertaining and Interesting to the MAX!

I have worked for a local-living Philadelphia Head Caterer, Maureen Gregory, and Sous Chef Miss Ellie at Appel Farm, a Fine Arts and Music Conference Center located in Elmer, NJ for the past 8 years. I have helped with dishwashing and aided in preparation and serving of complicated original recipes; I have enjoyed every second of it! When Maureen asked me if I would mind lending a hand at an Unschooling Conference in Central Jersey this past spring I said, 'of course, no problem'. This location was better for me anyway because I was living just south of Camp Lebanon, at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.

During this short weekend in March I met a most unusual kind of person. There was a young gentleman named Cameron Lovejoy who was going to be talking with parents and their kids (also "students" [of life]) about an idea called 'Unschooling'. Because of Cameron’s' alternative preference of education, he is now in a position to talk with families about his ideas of what the education system should look like. He has not been exposed to formal education since he was 12 years old, but is extremely well read and leaves a wonderfully intelligent impression (because he is). I am pleased and am so proud to say that I have become good friends with Cameron since we met. We spent part of that same weekend when washing dishes together; we were both learning a little bit about the world and life - the possibility of friendships from rare places? Perhaps a child can blossom into a fine young adult and beyond and have had very little exposure to k-12 education rigmarole.

What kinds of things should your kid learn and how do you want them to learn it? Please spend some time getting to know my good buddy, Cameron. Check out his current project that's due to hit the shelves (a conference center) this coming March, 2010; The Autodidact Symposium. Also, Cam is still doing some of his version of education; he travels all over the world and he joins people doing what they do in their daily lives. He writes about his experiences and posts pictures of depiction; his blog is SO much fun to follow! It's within blogspot and is just a click away!
