Fast Food Nutrition Comparison: Breakfast Items
posted November 1, 2009 - 11:59pm
A lot of people, including myself, are forced to eat breakfast on the run. We are in such a hurry that we grab a quick meal in the drive-thru. Are fast food breakfasts bad for you? The fourth article in my series on fast food nutrition deals
with breakfast items. I have chosen one of the more popular items at several fast food restaurants for comparison. Keep in mind that the items are not identical in size, but the chart gives you some numbers to compare. Let’s take a look:
Burger King – sausage and cheese croissanwich - | total calories – 380g | total fat – 24g | saturated fat – 10g | sodium – 780mg
Dairy Queen – sausage biscuit sandwich - | total calories – 540g | total fat – 37g | saturated fat – 10g | sodium – 1180mg
McDonalds – egg mcmuffin – | total calories – 300g | total fat – 12g | saturated fat – 5g | sodium – 820mg
Jack In The Box – breakfast jack - | total calories – 284g | total fat – 11g | saturated fat - 4g | sodium 790mg
Sonic – criossonic sandwich - | total calories – 600g | total fat – 45.8g | saturated fat – 17.6g | sodium – 1338mg
Whataburger – breakfast on a bun with sausage - | total calories – 550g | total fat – 38g | saturated fat – 14g | sodium – 1129mg
The egg mcmuffin is smaller than most items on this chart, so I expected it do well. Sonic, which scored well on the hamburger and French fires charts, performed very poorly here. The items with sausage in them seem to be higher in calories and fat. So watch what you eat and keep the visits to the drive thru at a minimum.
