The bedroom communities of America's largest cities are bristling with growth, largely due to suburban development. The high cost of urban living, cheaper land in the suburbs and new business opportunities in periphery communities are contributing to this boom. Not surprisingly, many of the most popular counties are in the South and Southwest--warm, business friendly, inexpensive and less populated than the Northeast. Here, in order of growth, is a look at the fastest-growing counties in America in percent of population increase from 2000 to 2006. We included counties with a population above 50,000 after July 1, 2006 (omitting Lincoln County, S.D., and Spencer County, Ky., from the Census Bureau's "fastest-growing" list). Counties with larger populations may have grown more in terms of pure numbers, but this list demonstrates where suburban boom is most intense.
