Fenbendazole is a benzimadazole anthelmentic which has a broad spectrum and a wide safety margin. It is used to treat the infection of many internal parasites such as roundworm, hookworm, threadworms and tapeworms. It can also be used to treat giardia and side effects are rarely seen.
Available in 222mg/g granules, 222mg/g suspensions and 100mg/g pastes, Fenbendazole works by binding to 3-tubulin protein that blocks polymerization of tubules into micro-tubules, which damages the integrity and the transport function of the cells in the parasites. The reason that it has a wide safety margin is its infinity to the parasite tubules rather than the mammal's. The drug is minimally absorbed after it is given orally, - most leaves the dog in faeces as fenbendazole, some is metabolised and returns to the gut and the drug is totally eliminated in 48 hours.
Fenbendazole can be used in cats and dogs over two weeks old and the average dose between 5mg/kg and 10mg/kg (sid) for three days and should not be given with bromsalan flukicides as it can result in abortion. Other side effects of the drug alone include nausea and vomiting and animals with hypersensitivity should avoid this drug.
The potency for this drug is 5mg/kg, the efficacy is 10mg/kg and the half life is around 7mg/kg.
