Fight heart disease with Ketchup?
posted March 22, 2007 - 2:48amTomato, Tomatoe, Catsup or Ketchup...did you know that you can fight heart disease with the ketchup you choose.
The Agricultural Research Service recently conducted a research project which proved that some organic ketchups contain 50% more lycopene than ketchups made from conventionally grown tomatoes.
So what does that have to do with heart disease? Lycopene is a carotenoid, the red pigment that gives a tomato it's color. Lycopene has already been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and also several cancers as well.
It's also known that the lycopene in cooked tomato products is easier for the human body to assimilate than that from fresh tomatoes.
This research would strongly suggest then, that ketchup made of organically grown tomatoes is what you should reach for on the grocers shelf, and the darker the red it is, the better.
