Finding Local Organic Produce and Groceries

Finding Local Organic Produce and Groceries

Finding local organic food and produce – at reasonable prices – can present a challenge to many families.  Community supported agriculture programs are local farms that offer their goods, often produce, eggs, breads and cheeses to members.  Members pay for shares by the season and get  produce at scheduled times.  Some CSAs offer members the ability to work for their share of the farm.

Benefits of Organic Produce

Organic produce and other goods are grown without pesticides, chemicals and antibiotics. The introduction of chemicals, pesticides and hormones to the food industry is thought by some to be harmful to health.  For those that want to eat foods free of these ingredients and processes, organic is the way to go.

Why Local Organic?

Just because a food is certifiied organic does not mean that it is healthy for the environment.  I can purchase organic berries all year long at my health food store, however the oil and air pollution it costs to ship from a tropical climate in the middle of winter is a cost that consumers pay in dollars and health.  Local organic produce may offer less options all year long, but leaves a green footprint on the planet and can be fun for families to eat seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as experiment with new recipes.

Finding Local Organic Produce and Goods

Large health food grocers may have a selection of local produce, however it may be limited. At  Local Harvest you can search for local organic farms and community supported agriculture programs.  Eat Wild  lets users search for local and online suppliers of organic and grass fed beef, meats and foods.

Some organic products may not be available locally, and it makes sense to buy certain items online either in bulk or in a cooperative to leave a greener footprint.  If you don't live near a store that has organic spices, herbs, and essential oils, Mountain Rose Herbs offers a good selection of certified organic goods.
