On the 'Fire David Letterman' Stupidity

The hoopla over David Letterman's attack on Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, and her family, continues. Palin supporters are charging the Late Show host with making indecent and sexist remarks about Palin's 14 year old daughter. I believe this was the offending quip:

"An awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.”

Letterman claims the joke was directed at Palin's 18 year old daughter, as opposed to the underage member of the conservative clan. Granted, that doesn't make the joke smell any better -- Letterman himself has admitted the comment was "in poor taste" -- but does he deserved to be fired over this incident? Apparently there enough outraged folks who believe he does. Several "Fire David Letterman" rallies are scheduled this week in New York, and a web site, www.firedavidletterman.com, has been created to get the word out.

Fire a comedian over a "sick joke"? Well, I guess we've been down this road many times before. Many comic greats have had to deal with the backlash from an irate public whenever they crossed the line and veered into territory of bad taste. That's comedy, folks. Sometimes the envelope gets pushed a little too far. It depends on the personal sensibilities of each individual to define when that has occurred. However, even though I personally feel Letterman crossed the line by picking on Palin's daughter, the notion of trying to have him removed from the airwaves strikes me as utterly absurd. If I'm offended by an entertainer's remarks, there are really only two solutions: 1. Shake it off. 2. Stop watching them.

What strikes me as most amusing about this whole campaign to oust Letterman from the airwaves is that it will most likely have the reverse effect. Well of course, his ratings have already risen through all this nonsense. He'll come out on top, believe me.

Even more amusing is the utter hypocrisy of the people involved in this. I'll go out on a limb, here, and assume that the greater percentage of the people offended are of a conservative bent (my firm grasp of the obvious is intact). So, now they are no better than the liberals who got themselves all bent out of shape over the whole Don Imus affair, which I found ridiculous, as well.

I'm proud to say that despite leaning to the left, politically, I've always been consistent when it comes to issues like this. I'll just sit back and watch all the hypocrites spin their wheels in the mud. It's not without a certain entertainment value, that's for sure.

At the end of the day,

At the end of the day, Letterman is doing what his network wants him to do: make money for them. All of this publicity is probably pulling in more viewers and making him even more relevant and watchable. Sarah Palin is such an easy target that if she doesn't want pointed barbs--and pretty lame ones at that--to come her way, she should get out of public life. That's what most people want anyway. She's a nutjob and not very intelligent. I shudder to think of her being one creeky old man away from having her thumb on the red button. Scary. She's hot though. Letterman

I hope this whole fiasco gives Dave a 'big-ass' jump in the ratings! (Lord knows he needs it!) WATCH LETTERMAN!

Sarah Palin Host

Host the Late Show? LOL..She's not qualified for that either! As a matter of fact, Letterman is a more qualified candidate for VP than she is! He has more of a grasp on national and world affairs and probably manages a larger budget than she does as governor of Alaska! I see her more of a co-host on one of those lame hunting programs..."Now that we've killed the wolves, Sarah is going to go drop a poison gas canister in the den so we don't have to deal with those cubs...Let's watch!..Look, you can see one peeking out..probably looking for his mom..they don't know what's going on!"

FIRE David Letterman

I think Sarah Palin would be an excellent host of the Late Show. Will it be broadcast, still, from New York? Good piece. +1 ↑ Grab this Headline Animator

Jon Stewart AMERICAN HERO to join Palin band wagon I'd wager

BUT DON'T RUIN IT FOR ME IF HE ALREADY HAS... We don't get it until the day after in England. The Daily Show 8:30 in the pm on Digital Channel Freeview 14 (More4) I hope he does amd he puts together a skit on the right trashy indignation. Like their reaction to Eminem and the bottom of the Brit Cohen in his face (evening viewing) then FOX TV with semi-clad women falling over to reveal theirs to the morning family audience. Too late to ruin it - off to watch Daily Show now! JOIN XOMBA HERE FREE Xomba is an international online community and anyone can join. The fawning over Palin is disgusting

"Oh, that poor Sarah Palin. A mother who only wants to protect her innocent daughter from that dirty old man." Yet, they said nothing while she was campaigning and turning her "innocent" daughters out for political points with the voters. If the Republican Party is still searching for a message, it better keep looking. So far, all we've seen is "We can dish it out but we can't take it." Small wonder I walked away from political article writing after the election. CLICK HERE TO JOIN XOMBA TODAY!

That's the American media, for you

"Smells like another media diversion. Do people have nothing better to do than have rallies against a TV chat show host? Times must be really good when people can ignore all the myriad crap in the world and focus on two nobodies." Sad as it is, it seems we'd rather focus our attention on trivial matters than deal with the more serious issues. Celebrity feuds get an embarrassing amount of attention. Such diversions suit most journalists in this country because it frees their brains from having to think too much. ↑ Grab this Headline Animator
