Fires, like this, were pretty much unheard of in the L.A. area before 1980. There seems to be a lot more of them and much larger. And, many more, since, have been set by arsonists.
And, of course, the population of the area has increased greatly, as, well, as, more building in areas where no building should have ever been allowed.
It's a sad reality of the people we have become.
