The first 21st Century Car

Oil is a product of the 20th Century. Like many other things that became staples of everyday life for people who lived in the 20th Century, oil has become a burden to people of this century, as, well, as, the planet. Hybrid cars are a nice alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles, but, they are still gasoline powered.

As the auto industry tries to attract buyers through better fuel economic vehicles I keep wondering why can't the auto makers understand that to be truly attractive they need to offer a machine which does not rely on oil-based fuel for any of its power. In this century oil-based fuels are, simply, automotive heroin. People can't live without it. They can't live without it because nothing else has been offered.

Nothing, until now!

The first car based on an early 20th Century idea, but, scrapped in favor of cheap oil, has now become the first real car of the 21st Century. Meet the Tesla, from Tesla Motors Inc. The Tesla sports car is all-electric. It has a driving range of over 230 miles between charges, and can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds. The current price tag is $50,000.

And, the Tesla has no tail pipes because there is no exhaust, no pollution. The Tesla is now in full production.
Tesla Motors has just announced the building of a new automobile production plant in San Jose, California, where new cars will begin rolling off the assembly line late in 2009. This new plant is expected to employ 400 people.

[“Electric cars equal freedom. Not simply from oil reliance, but from dependence on any specific power source. Electric power can be generated from natural gas, coal, solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear sources — or a combination of all of them — without changing the design of the car. No matter how or when the world changes, the car adapts, making it immune from obsolescence.” Tesla Motors]

The Tesla's engine weighs a mere 150 pounds.

Their website is absolutely awesome. You can look at every piece of this unique automobile, inside, outside, under the hood, drivetrain, and see all the colors available. But, better than just seeing all the colors, with the click of your mouse you can mix and match, both interior and exterior colors to create a Tesla in the colors you like best. It's really cool!

There are three style of leather interior – from single color to two-tone, and one interior of cloth-type seats.

The company is named after Nikola Tesla, the man who gave the world AC Power, its the power that lights your house.
