Five Simple (and a Little Sneaky) Ways to Get a Cheap Haircut

The cost of a haircut these days is not insignificant and if you need a trim every four to six weeks, it can really take a bite out of your bank account. It's not unusual for an upscale hair salon in a large city to charge over a hundred dollars for a single haircut. These kind of fees can add up quickly. The truth is you probably don't need to go to an expensive, cutting edge hair salon to keep your hair looking its best. Here are some ways to save money on hair care by getting an inexpensive haircut.

Go to two different salons.

If you want to save money but still want to sport a cutting edge haircut, get your original cut done at a more expensive salon and have it maintained at a more budget minded salon such as Cost Cutters. You can have a trendy haircut and still save money.

Book an appointment on Monday.

Call the salon of your choice on a Monday when they're the slowest. Ask if they'll give you a ten to twenty percent discount if you come in today. Many salons are eager for customers at the beginning of the week and will take you up on the offer.

Go to your local cosmetology school.

It's a bit more risky, but you can usually get a decent haircut for very little money at a cosmetology school. The students need the practice and if you're willing to let them practice on you, you can keep some extra money in your wallet. This option is best if you're looking for a simple trim or an uncomplicated haircut. Best of all, if you don't like the way it turns out, it's usually free.

Go to a barber shop.

This is another option if you want an uncomplicated cut. Barber shops are much less expensive than a salon since they generally have lower overhead. You may not get all the bells and whistles you'd get at a high end salon, but you'll get the job done.

Keep your hair simple.

The best way to save money on haircuts is to keep your haircut simple so it requires minimal upkeep. All one length hair only needs an occasional trim which can be done at a local cosmetology school or a barber shop. You'll also have more flexibility with single length hair. You can wear it up or down, braid it, put it in a ponytail, curl it, or add hair accessories to change the look. Sometimes simpler is better when it comes to saving money.

A final option is to learn to cut your own hair or teach your spouse or other family member to cut it for you. You can return the favor and everyone saves!
