Following Your Favorite College Football Team From Afar
posted November 5, 2009 - 4:52pm
Following the games of your favorite football team can be a lifelong passion, or perhaps even obsession. After all, the word fan is short for fanatic, and more often than not, this is the case. Unfortunately, in today’s modern society, we often
end up moving to someplace far away from our beloved team. That’s when you have to get creative, especially if you want to keep up with the day to day progress of your favorite gridiron gang.
Over the years, I have found that the internet is a great source of football information. You might say that when it comes to football, the internet is my best friend. Back in the old days, I would have my Mom tape games on a cassette recorder and mail them to me. That way, I could hear them, usually on the following Thursday or Friday. Today however, almost all of the major college games can be heard on the internet. Yahoo Sports has a service that allows you to listen to these games live, although you do have to pay for some of these. But hey, it’s cheaper than buying a cassette recorder and paying for postage. You can also follow the progress of the game for free, with written updates for every play.
The internet is your best friend. Yes, I know, I’m being redundant, but there are so many web sites available with information on your team. I like to go on line to seek out the local newspapers back home, and that way, I can read all about how old Favorite U is doing. When I was 800 miles away in college, I actually subscribed to my local paper, so that I could read the stories and previews of the upcoming games. Again, this would be there 2-3 days late, but it was the best I could do. Thank you once again, guy who created the internet.
The internet is your best friend. Okay, that’s the last of that. But other terrific areas are the chat rooms, blogs, and forum sites where you can discuss your team. One of the greatest things about being a fan is dissecting the latest game intricate detail. Every always likes to talk about how the ref’s cheated us, and how the bonehead coach should be fired, and why is that second string quarterback not starting. Surprisingly, people in other states are not that interested in discussing my team. So, these sites can keep us kindred spirits together, allowing us to all share the joy…or the pain.
Cable TV is pretty nice too. Depending on the popularity of your team, there is a good chance you will find them on cable TV, at least a couple of times a year. There are also more and more sports packages that sell specific conferences games. Although it is still just a dream, hopefully someday soon we can all have the Nirvana of total access to all of our games. Until then, it will take a little creativity and a little sleuthing to achieve that goal. If you are persistent, however, you can get all the home team football that you want.
