Of all the NASCAR venues in the United States, few are better recognized and respected than the Bristol Motor Speedway. While many of the tracks on the circuit look the same, race the same, and sound the same, Bristol is completely unique. It stands out for a number of reasons, and because of that, the Food City 500 is one of the races that people look forward to the most. Held on March 22nd, the day race at Bristol is always a fan and driver favorite.
Bristol is what you might call a “short” track and at only around one half of a mile, it’s the shortest track on the circuit. This means that there are a ton of laps run on the track, and there is always a lot of action. While cars might get separated at places like Daytona, Talladega, and Charlotte, the cars stay packed up and bunched up for the duration of the Food City 500. You can probably guess what this leads to. At Bristol, big time wrecks are a part of the culture.
When the boys head to Bristol for the day race, you can count on more than just wrecks, though. Some of the best names in NASCAR history have made a name for themselves in the race, and the wild fans there are sure to see a great race. This is typically one of the most difficult tickets to get in the entire sports world, and fans take to heart their reputation as being the loudest crowd in the sporting world. With the configuration of the track and the stands, the sound is amazing in Bristol and this adds something to the overall experience.
The Food City 500 will be an important one for points purposes, as the NASCAR Sprint Cup gets going well into its season. Jeff Gordon leads the pack, but Clint Boyer, Matt Kenseth, and Greg Biffle aren’t far behind. Preseason favorites Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, and Carl Edwards are stalking the leaders in the top-10, and a good performance at Bristol could help boost any of them into the top three going forward into April.
The Food City 500 has a reputation to uphold and there is little doubt that it will once again live up to its previous reputation as a great NASCAR event. As one of the few places on the Sprint Cup circuit where both drivers and fans get excited about the race ahead, this one is truly a gem. It’s an experience of a lifetime for any fan who is lucky enough to get tickets, and it’s a race that drivers must focus on completely because of the constant chance that a big wreck could be coming.
