For Your Own Safety: Before Clicking an Off-Site Video Link, Check the User's Profile

Just some friendly advice. There has been a rash of scam artists here and elsewhere on the Internet claiming to have some hard-to-get spicy video link for whatever celebrity happens to be in the news that day. When you click the link and go to view the video, they tell you "Oops, you need to install an Active X object or video codec to view the video." If you do install the object or codec, you download adware or other types of malware that other can use to steal passwords and other personal information.

The same can be said for certain download sites (free AND paid) that will embed malware into the video.

Now, Nick and his moderation team have been doing one heck of a job rooting these bastids out and deleting them. That is one of the things I love about Xomba. But, what happens if you come across one in the wee hours of the morning or you are unsure if what was posted is okay?

The easiest and perhaps quickest way to check is to look at the person's Profile page. Many of the scam artists are associated with or clones of the Russian Business Network aka the Russian Mob. Therefore, English is not their first language (and perhaps they don't speak it at all). By using rough translators, like Altavista Babelfish, they can give the text appearance of being American or of an English-speaking nationality. They also may use automated programs to sign up on websites and create profiles before posting their dirty links, often cutting-and-pasting stock profiles and text.

It's because of the automated programs that many websites have switched to requiring its users to manually enter the funky-looking code in the box before doing something. The code foils the automated programs.

This following profile has been used many times by the scam artists, so if you see it here or elsewhere connected to a username that looks like random letters put together, be very wary of clicking any links you find posted:

Quote:

Gender: Female

Country: USA

Age: 18

City: new york

State: NEW YORK

Occupation: personal

Hobbies: TV,sports,music

Fav. Music: u2,metallica,scorpions

Fav. Movies: all bout james bond

Bio: nice guy

Fav. website: http://google.com

Note that the gender of this alleged person says "Female" but the Bio says "nice guy".

I'm not trying to freak anybody out or make anyone paranoid about posting on the Internet. The Internet is still a wonderful place to meet people; this goes double for Xomba. Just keep your eyes and ears open and take a moment of pause before clicking that link or installing that file.
