Glasses, spectacles, vision improvement equipment, aka eyewear comes in all shapes and sizes some are to help us see and some are just accessories. These days, with lasik surgery, and great advances in contact lens technology, wearing prescription glasses is almost becoming a thing of the past. Some of us however, either make poor candidates for surgery and cannot or are too lazy to wear contacts, so are therefore are subject to wearing eyeglasses. In any case, whatever your reason for wearing them, they can be quite pricey so you will want to take good care of them.

LENSES

The lenses can be either made of glass or a plastic compound. Glass is a bit more scratch resistant but heavier and if you wear glasses all the time this can cause a red mark on your nose. Plastic lenses are much lighter and more comfortable than the glass. Plastics have come a long way since the early days and scratch resistant coatings have made scuffs almost a thing of the past. You still have to take care not to set your glasses down on the lenses because “resistant” doesn’t mean they are scratch proof try to use the case when you need to take them off for any amount of time. Both glass and plastic get fogged up when coming in from the cold, there are anti-fog lens cleaners you can buy but, it isn’t 100% ‘fog preventative”.

Most optometry centres will recommend that you use a special ‘eyeglass cloth’ and ‘eyeglass cleanser spray’ to clean your glasses with. Apparently tissue, paper towel, and toilet paper might possibly have burrs or substances in them that could scratch your lenses (I guess that means the inside of your tee shirt is a no-no too).

NOSE PIECE

The nose pieces are usually attached with screws and are out from the lenses. They will need to be cleaned as well because oil and dirt from the skin will build up if they are not. You can run them under hot water and use a q-tip to clean around them if you want them really clean, you can buy an ‘eyeglass repair kit’ (not more than two bucks) with a tiny screw driver in it, take them right off and wash them separately.

ARMS

These can be very delicate and breakable, and you definitely need both of them, straight and in tact, to keep your glasses in good balance on your face. Even though there are some tough brands out there, don’t risk it, because if you do manage to break them, you may have to go without glasses for a day - not worth it. You may want to clean the curved part that rests on your ear, oil and dirt can build up there too. Chewing the ends of them is as bad a habit as biting your nails and can cause rough edges making them uncomfortable to wear. The more you fold the arms, the looser they will become. Not folding them will keep the arms tight but makes them impossible to fit in the case.

EXTRA TIPS

Remember, eyeglasses add a bit to the circumference of your head so can get caught when you are putting on or removing a shirt with a tight collar. If the arms are loose, your glasses could fall off when bending, turning your head to fast or engaging in sports. Taking a nap with your glasses on may result in bent arms or popped lenses, so try to remove them before your snooze. Forgetting where you put them can be a bad thing especially if you need them to see, so try not to lose them or keep a spare set somewhere you can recall, that way you will be able to find the others.
