DURHAM, N.C. – Just before the Memorial Day weekend, some companies are giving away $8,000 of free gasoline to help ease the gas crunch on your wallet.

Verizon’s Yellow Pages and Superpages.com is sponsoring the giveaway. According to press release, the companies will give away $40 in pre-paid gas cards to the first 200 vehicles at the Shell Station located at 3615 N. Roxboro Street in Durham.

The promotion takes place on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a part of a nationwide promotion.

According to AAA, the average price of gas is up 1.8 percent compared to last year - with the national average gas price t $3.776. AAA is reporting that about 31.7 million people are expected hit the road over Memorial Day weekend.
