Consultants and Experts Becoming Article Writers and Using the Web to Market
When starting a project like this, whether it is to market products, services, expertise and knowledge or to build up a monthly income or both, many Consultants and Experts discover they have umpteen articles in the form of essays, presentations, pitches, publicity, marketing material, speeches and website copy they have written during their careers. It is by publishing these online, in article form, with one or more article publishing sites they achieve free online marketing and PR, an additional income, and may increase sales.
A Step By Step Guide for Beginners
THE FIRST STEP: Registering with Google’s Adsense Program
If you are interested in developing additional revenue from publishing articles the first step is to register for a Google Adsense account. Although there are other programs you’ll want to investigate to monetise your articles and maximise their earnings in the future, the most useful and easily the top payer is Google Adsense. More details are available here: www.google.com/adsense
How Google Adsense Works to Generate Additional Monthly Income
Your articles will generate the contextual and relevant “ads by Google” you see on many websites and alongside many articles. Google pay an undisclosed amount for each [mouse-]click on these adverts. It is against Google’s terms and conditions to disclose the amounts paid for each click but if you do a little research online you will read reports of anywhere between 2 cents and $15 per click. As with all advertising the price paid is to do with supply, demand, value and worth to advertisers. For instance, it would be safe to assume that advertisers of dating sites pay less than advertisers of luxury yachts per click-through from their adverts to their websites.
WARNINGS: Never click your own Google ads. Never request that someone clicks your ads. To do either is Click Fraud and Google will suspend your account immediately.
THE SECOND STEP Write Your Articles:
The second is to write or re-write your articles for online publication. We have given a concise account of the format of the best articles to publish below, but first something about what you should and should not publish:
Articles Online - What Not to Publish
Apart from material you do not own (see WARNING below) you can literally publish anything online, including rubbish, rants and boring autobiographical episodes but (unless they are unintentionally hilarious AND discovered by surfers through some quirk of the web) they will not be read and will not earn much if any income. Such “articles” add to the detritus you have to wade through every time you google for information.
WARNING: Do not infringe copyrights. You cannot under copyright law publish material which you do not own the copyright to without written permission of its author. Members of publishing sites have been rightfully banned for doing so. For Experts and Consultants with years experience and vast knowledge and much original content to share online this will give some reassurance. You can check to see if any of your articles have been used without your consent at http://www.copyscape.com. Other sites exist where you can check to see if defined extracts from your articles have been used. Google "plagiarism tools" to locate them. Articles Online - What to Publish
The web cries out for original, useful, informative and well written content. This is why more and more Consultants and Experts are being attracted to it, seeing where their skills fit in and how they can maximise their potential for marketing and financial advantages. In many cases (as discussed) they have a stock of material and the good writing skills necessary to fulfil the web’s voracious needs.
THE THIRD STEP However, writing for the web is a relatively new genre and demands different structures. In addition there are certain rules which should be adhered to – not common with other genres – in order to maximise readership and revenue from advertisers. Instead of learning these rules by trial and error (it took the writer of this article two years of experimentation and research to discover these) implement them from the start:
The FIRST RULE is Search Engine Optimisation, a.k.a. SEO. This involves writing or rewriting articles to make them Search Engine friendly. It sounds icky but your article will be “crawled” by “robots” aka “spiders” working for all Search Engines including Google (accounting for 70% of all web searches and visitors to most sites) and others such as Yahoo, MSN and AOL. The spiders read the content and determine where the article will be indexed (e.g. Page 1 of Google search results – what we all want - or page 157 - which nobody does!).
THE SECOND RULE: The title is (or should be) descriptive, include relevant keywords and attract its potential readers to click on its link. Keywords are terms people are likely to put into search boxes to find articles about your area/s of expertise. For instance: a designer or maker of blue plastic chairs wants to promote that fact in an article about their uses for interior designers could use the title “Blue Plastic Chairs Offer Solutions for Interior Designers” because s/he decided that “Blue Plastic Chairs” and “Interior Designers” were the best keywords for his article.
THE THIRD RULE: The Article’s body will include the same keywords e.g. “Blue Plastic Chairs” and “Interior Designers” as in the example above.
THE FOURTH RULE: Tags - When submitting an article for the first time you will discover a “tag box” insert the keywords you have employed in your title and repeated in your article’s main body – e.g. “Blue Plastic Chairs” and “Interior Designers”
What an SE Friendly Article Looks Like
Typical, SEOed articles adhere to the rules above. They are usually circa 400-600 words. Many are written to fill one page only. Exceptions (like this article which is 1600+ words) are articles which aim to give full accounts and instructions – that can be used as a one stop reference. For Consultants and Experts with wordy documents (for example a thesis or a novel of 80,000 words) they may publish these as one document, but to maximise the potential of earnings from this volume of work we recommend that these be divided into separate articles (similar to chapters) and each has a unique title. Learn how to link each article to the next, first and previous article in its sequence and publish a synopsis in a separate article with links to all articles.
Online Marketing and PR
There are obvious ways to increase the value of your articles and chief among these is the marketing of products, services and the expertise of the writer or their associates. Product and Service Reviews, Case Studies and interesting aspects of the above make good, concise and SE friendly articles and attract viewers with particular interest. Articles which feature product launches, office openings, about the skills of people you’ve recently employed make good PR. Press releases can be published as articles too. All of these articles can link back to a main website or that of a relevant party. (This incidentally works to increase the Page Rank of your website. Linking all articles to one website can turn a PR0 website into a PR2 quite quickly).
There are other methods of marketing and uses for PR in addition to those mentioned above. All require you drive more traffic to your articles. The author of this article will share some of these with Consultants and Experts who join Xomba (see details below) to write articles see HERE: http://www.xomba.com/referral/7779c333
