Freedom for Journalists

Across the world journalists are attacked personally, legally, and even physically. In the nation of Azerbaijan several journalists and editors are in prison and new constitutional amendments are stripping them of what little protection they have left.

Currently the Azeri government uses tactics such as civil suits and criminal prosecution to intimidate journalists. Many journalists have been beaten and tortured by unknown assailants, on man was murdered in 2005.

The new amendment being proposed by the Regime of president Aliyev would give the Azeri government the right to suspend media organizations for reasons such as using anonymous sources or writing "biased" articles.

This ammendment does not only attack Azeri media organizations but also international and non-government organizations. NGOs must recieve at least 50% of their funding locally, anyone making statements on behalf of an NGO can be fined 50,000AZN (62,500 USD), and unfavorable organizations can be banned for up to five years.

One man, Emin Huseynov worked tirelessly to protect his fellow journalists in Azerbaijan, He was the head of the Institute For Reporters Freed and Safety, an Azeri organization seeking to protect journalists. He was arrested at a party and he was then beaten so severely that he was hospitalized for 24 days,
