Freshman Dorm (A Series of College Excerpts)

It was raining when they left the coffee shop. His freshman dorm was a good ten minutes closer than hers. He led her there.
“I thought we might end
up back here,” Charlotte joked, looking around as she stepped into his room. He was rummaging in his closet, and he heard the quiver in her voice, but she played it off. “Where’s your roommate?”
He shrugged, finally having discovered what he was looking for. “Dunno.” He held out his find to her.
She stared at the gray mass, utterly bemused. “A sweatshirt?”
“It’s the only one I’ve got,” he answered. “I didn’t want you walking back to your dorm without one in the rain.”
“That’s why we came here?”
He stared at her, honestly bewildered. “What did you think?”
“I just—”she touched the sweatshirt.
“It’s kind of old,” he said hastily. “A hand-me-down—you don’t have to—”
“Thank you, Thomas,” she said. She took it from him, and put it on.
“I can walk you back now.”
“No,” she said. “I’ll be fine.” She kissed him; the shock of it nearly knocked Thomas off balance. She laughed and walked out.
