From Rainforest Jungle to Shipping Waterway: Travel the Unique Waters of the Gulf of Panama
posted March 25, 2008 - 10:30pmThe Panama Canal is an engineering marvel that replaced the treacherous 8000 nautical mile route around South America's Cape Horn down to a mere 50 miles through lakes and locks, but there is more to this country than the shipping waterway. Passengers on Panama Marine Adventure's eight day cruise will experience the country's wide variety of landscapes as the M/V Discovery travels along Panama’s inter-oceanic route between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This "Journey between the Seas" features a chance to meet the Embera Indians, native to the Darien Jungle, join the divers from Esmeralda in their search for pearls, and swim in the waters of the Pearl Islands. After traversing the canal, guests will walk in the footsteps of the conquistadors along the Chagres River and visit the town founded by Christopher Columbus in 1597, Portobelo. The M/V Discovery departs weekly on most Saturdays throughout the year, and on selected dates in May and October. (There are no departures in September.) The eight day trip is $3995, which includes lodging in a queen or twin cabin, all meals on board and many activities.
