FTC Videos Explain Endorsement Guides and What New Rulings Mean to Bloggers

Federal Trade Commission 16 CFR Part 255 - Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising

The Federal Trade Commission has released a series of short videos to explain the revised Endorsement and Testimonial Guides and how new rulings affect bloggers.

Though most bloggers aren't going to be affected by the new guidelines, the FTC videos stress that the new rules are just meant to ensure that everyone is playing by the same set of rules when it comes to advertising. Some bloggers present product or service reviews without mention of the fact that they receive compensation in the form of free products, trips or services in exchange for reviews. The new rules state that any compensation or conflict of interest is made clear. If the reviewer receives certain products from a company, then they must now let their readers know that they received such merchandise.

1. What's new about the Endorsement Guides?
2. Why did the FTC update the Endorsement Guides?
3. What do the Endorsement Guides mean for bloggers?
