A gadfly is without honor in his lifetime, but just wait until he's dead

A gadfly is without honor in his lifetime, but just wait until he's dead

When I went to college in the 1970s, there was one professor who
was a real gadfly. This guy was obviously a product of The Sixties,
and his passion in life was taking on the Establishment. In this
case the Establishment was the college administration. As you might
guess, the administration was none too happy to be the object of
his righteous wrath. I can't remember what the conflict was about,
but conflict there was, constantly spread across the pages of the student
newspaper. It was clear the administration wished Professor Gadfly
would go away, or at least shut up.

Well, they got their wish. The professor suddenly dropped dead of
a heart attack at age 30. Maybe they privately said "good riddance."
But publically they sorrowfully lamented the passing of their beloved
professor. They named a new wing of the school after him. They established
a scholarship in his name. It was as if all the conflict and animosity
had never existed.

I just found the blatant hypocrisy to be highly amusing.
