Gaming Mice Features
posted April 24, 2009 - 8:49pmToday's gaming mice are much more advanced than those of even just a few years ago. With higher DPI, advanced programmable buttons and a myriad of other options choosing the best gaming mice can be difficult. Here's a look at some of the features to help you decide on which of the best gaming mice is right for you.
One of the newest features of dedicated gaming mice is higher DPI ratings. What is DPI? Well, simply put, is a measure of how accurately gaming mice can target something on the screen. The higher the DPI the more accurate the gaming mouse is.
Going along with the DPI is the scroll speed. This is a measure of how far the cursor will move in relation to how far the gaming mouse is moved. The very best gaming mice will allow you to adjust this setting on the fly. Go fast for close in work, then slow it down for some sniping accuracy.
Gaming mice today feature programmable buttons. They allow you to program a keypunch (or series of keypunches) to one button on the mouse. If, for example, the game you are playing requires a keypunch of alt + H to accomplish a certain thing, you can actually program this into a single gaming mouse button. This really makes your gaming more efficient and easier. No more remembering complicated key strokes.

Now, to decide how many programable buttons you need on your gaming mouse you can generally decide by how complicated the games are that you play.
Shooter type games usually have relatively few key strokes, so you can get away with a gaming mouse with few programmable buttons. For role playing games and MMOs you'll need lots more as those types of games can be quite complicated.
Some gaming mice, such as the microsoft one linked below allow you to actually customize the balance by adding (or subtracting) counter weights on the mouse unit, a nice feature for those long gaming sessions.
For you World of Warcraft players there's a new mouse called the SteelSeries Special Editiion mouse that features 16 million different color schemes, 15 programmable buttons and can store up to 10 different character profiles. I've linked it below.

When you're ready to go shopping for gaming mice I suggest reading gaming mouse reviews, they are written by unbiased users and often times have the lowest prices listed right in the review.
