When I go into my garden or greenhouse I feel the worries of the day melt away. I'm not the doctor but good old fashioned common sense says this type of activity must be really good for people with stress problems. I am sure that it must be good for people to be out in the fresh air, close to nature and the plants, getting some sunlight.
I do what I love and never hate going to work.

It has to be healthier if you do not create a negative mindset. If you do not like gardening just think about how much better you are going to feel as well as how impressed the doctor is going to be at your next visit. Never beat yourself up thinking "this sucks" while gardening. If you start to hate it then it will be worse for you to do it.
So, gardening is without doubts a very private thing. I think it is depending on the person. If the person doesn't like gardening at all, it will just make it more stressful. But if the person likes it, it will give him a pleasure.
But I have one problem I do a lot of gardening and seldom wear any type of work gloves or garden gloves. I wear gloves only when I will be using some type of gardening tool for an extended period of time to avoid blisters etc. My hands get so dried out from the dirt and from all this gardening work. I use a few different types of lotions without much luck.
