Gasoline, Milk and Terrorists
posted July 26, 2008 - 8:20amOK, so let me get this straight..People are supposed to rejoice and be happy that the price of gas is under $4 a gallon? Everyone should be dancing on rainbows when it drops down another quarter by Labor Day?
Every time there is a spike in fuel prices, then it dips back down and settles in at a new "norm" that is higher than it ever was and people wipe their brows and say "whew!" Sorry, but it just don't cut it for me...and I hope people, in general, are not that stupid. However, it seems the oil companies and those that are getting their pockets stuffed by them think that they are.
We should all be demanding more support for alternative fuel development. It's a fairly simple process to convert a car to a Natural Gas Vehicle. The problem is that there ae no NGV stations, or very few, so this is not a vaible option for most people. (So, which comes first the chicken or the egg?) Compressed Natural Gas (or liquified natural gas), is a safe, clean alternative to gasoline. Most of these vehicles can be found in countries like Thailand, Brazil, Argentina and Pakistan. many busses in Thailand are even running on CNG. I've ridden in many NGV's in Thailand and they are smooth running and responsive vehicles. Many of the taxicabs in Bangkok run on CNG. Sure, you may lose a little trunk space for the tank, but with the price of gas, you can't really fill it up with groceries now, can you?
So, what's holding us back from getting out from under the net of the oil companies? Probably the same reasoning that allows them to continue to increase the price at the pumps and leave people thankful that the price just went down again.
I've heard talk of drugs funding terrorism. Well, I wonder what would happen if the US stopped relying on gasoline so much and drastically cut down on oil consumption. My guess, is that not only would some multi-million/billionaires take a cut in their incomes, but it might even put a crimp in the pipeline that feeds terrorists. I may be wrong, but I am convinced that there is more "oil money" going to fund terrorists than there is drug money. Do I have facts to back it up? Nope, so don't ask me. it's just a gut feeling from working quite a bit in the Middle East. Just look at how radical Islamic terrorists have "exploded" onto the scene and become more and more dangerous as their brothers get richer and richer. As far as I'm concerned, if you're "going green" you are helping to fight terrorism. But, maybe that's just me.
And why haven't I seen headlines that milk is getting upwards of $5 a gallon? I'm not faulting the dairy farmers, but, then again I haven't passed by any dairy farms lately. Are the cows all wearing bling? Are there Bentleys parked up at the farmhouse? These are questions that need to be addressed.
