Ever since the Islamic militant group Hamas seized control of Gaza last summer, prompting neighboring Israel and Egypt to restrict movement through commercial crossings, Gazans have come to rely on goods smuggled into the area via underground tunnels into Egypt.

In fact an entire zoo has been populated with smuggled animals.

Smuggling Via Tunnels Flourishes As Gaza's Borders Remain Sealed

With Gaza's overland borders with Israel and Egypt essentially sealed for the last 16 months, Gaza's tunnel smugglers continue to sustain a trickling of trade with the outside world. In order to keep the links open, authorities on both sides of the Gaza/Egyptian border are turning a blind eye or even encouraging the activity. Even so, this trade route remains extremely dangerous and forty five tunnelers have been killed this year in accidents and in Egyptian police raids.
