Geico Cavemen to Get Their Own ABC TV Sitcom
posted March 3, 2007 - 8:44amGetting a sitcom greenlighted is so easy, even a caveman can do it! -- That may be what some in Hollywood are saying after hearing that a sitcom has been developed based on the caveman character that appears in the car insurance company's commercials.
The trade paper Variety says that the sitcom, which is being developed for ABC, will deal with three cavemen living in modern day Atlanta. As in the commercials, they'd deal with prejudices including the perception that cavemen are backwards. In the commercials the cavemen, while distinctively hairy and having the facial features of humans from an earlier age, are sophisticated and hang out at trendy nightspots, and dress and talk in an urbane manner.
The writer of the Geico commercials, Joe Lawson, may write the sitcom as well. Lawson is also the writer of Geico's other high-profile commericals, including the gecko with a British accent and one called "Tiny House" that spoofed reality TV shows.
Will Speck and Josh Gordon have been named to direct the pilot; they are commercial directors who recently directed the forthcoming Will Farrell film "Blades of Glory."
In one commercial, a caveman heading to his flight in an airport is frustrated when he sees by a Geico poster with the slogan, "Geico.com-- So easy a caveman could do it!", featuring a caveman character dressed in animal skins and carrying a club.
In another commercial, actress Talia Shire stars as a psychiatrist who is helping one of the cavemen deal with his frustration and anger over the misperceptions of cavemen created by Geico. At one point in the commercial the caveman's cell phone rings and he says, "It's my mother. I'll put it on speaker." Seems that boys were having mother issues even back in the caveman days!
