A hacker named George Hotz has broke through the AT&T/Apple iPhone lock. At the age of 17 he has broken through the most popular cell phone allowing it to be used by many other cell phone networks.
Residing in Glen Rock, N.J., George Hotz had claimed that he was using his unlocked iPhone on the T-Mobile network. This is actually the only providor in the U.S. that is compatible with all of the iPhone's features. George has a blog where there is a picture of him holding his iphone. On the phone you can see that T-Mobile is the carrier.
People probably won't benefit that much from switching over to T-Mobile from AT&T, but they will probably benefit overseas.
Hotz believes that that is definately what matters more.
As some may know already, the iPhone has a unique touch screen that can play media just like the iPod. The phone is also only available in the United States.
AT&T has not contacted Hotz, nor returned any phone calls in a timely fashion.
Hotz posted the hacking process on his blog on Thursday. It is difficult to do and you must know how to tamper with software, as well as know how to solder. For Hotz, it takes about two hours to complete. In result of the information being public, there could definately be a few companies that spring up, trying to profit off of this unlocking process.
Hotz would prefer that this doesn't happen. The thought that people could profit on this does not make Hotz very happy.
Hotz however has made some money off of his ability to unlock the iPhone. He put the unlocked iPhone up on ebay. The phone was up to $2000 by mid friday. Already a $1500 profit.
George Hotz will be attending the Rochester Institute of Technology to study neuroscience.
