GERD Suffers: Chronic Heartburn Can Cause Asthma

A new year and a new reason to get your heartburn under control, chronic heartburn, GERD, can cause asthma.
A recent study done by Duke University researchers found that about half of the people who suffer from asthma have some degree of GERD, gastrointestinal reflux disease. GERD is characterized by repeated bouts of heartburn or acid reflux.
Because the stomach contents and the acidic digestive juices that reflux into the lungs and esophagus injure lung tissue, over time, GERD can lead to asthma causing immune system changes.
GERD can and does cause asthma. Eating right now and controlling your GERD, will help you breathe easier later.
To help get your heartburn under control and help prevent asthma, eat smaller meals, avoid foods that trigger your GERD, and don't lie down within two after eating. If your heartburn is chronic, it may be time to talk to your doctor about medication to control it.
