Get High Without Drugs
posted April 13, 2008 - 4:03amWe were born to get high!
We have always reached for ways to change the way we think or feel. As far back as the Stone Age, we were breathing, spinning, dancing, drumming, dreaming and consuming herbs and potions to change our heads around, and to feel more connected with all creation.
Many of us have gotten very accustomed to reaching for a drink, a smoke or a hit of something strong to accomplish this change. Often, it seems to take more and more of the desired substance to get the job done. Many of us have also reached the point where this activity has demolished our lives, our loves, our jobs and our self-esteem. Often, by the time we “hit bottom”, we are consumed with toxic shame, and we begin to fear that there is just simply something wrong or sinful about good feelings of any kind.
It just ain’t so! It’s good to get high. We just need to find ways to do it without drugs or drink; ways that also don’t involve dropping out to live in a monastery or giving up food, sex, TV or anything else for that matter. It also needs to be something we can do that only takes a few minutes out of life, partly because we are busy, and partly because instant gratification just takes too long!
The good news is that we are all living, breathing pharmacies, open 24/7, with an unlimited supply of Rx pads.
It’s simple. Anything we can accomplish with booze or drugs can be accomplished without it. Our nervous systems and brains are hardwired for pleasure, and filled with every possible mood-altering chemical.
Without getting too technical, there are substances called neurotransmitters within us all. These are a big part of how our brain knows what to do and how to feel. All any drug ever does is either pretend to be a neurotransmitter, or change the levels on what we already have in there. Whether you want to go up, down, blissed out, tranquilized, stoned out or tripping, the raw materials are already there, just waiting for you to tell them what to do.
I am sharing an exercise today that is a perfect place to start taking control of how you feel. Since stress is a huge part of most of our lives, we can start right now to deal with that. This exercise is proven to reduce stress. It can also refresh you in ways that are a lot like a 2 or 3 hour nap (No, it is NOT a replacement for sleep!) I’m not making any wild claims here, but a lot of people get effects rather like tranquilizers, alcohol, or marijuana from this exercise. All I can say is try it for yourself. I have never seen it hurt anyone, and most people say that it really helps them feel great for several hours, and that it helps them cope with daily stresses and frustrations. It also seems to help put us into a more creative state, often associated with “Alpha” brainwaves.
Unlike drugs or alcohol, which become less and less effective over time, this is something that usually gets BETTER every time you do it, sort of like riding a bike. A little practice gives back great rewards. A suggested practice is to listen to this exercise twice a day, once in the morning, and once at bedtime, but you are always the best judge of what works for you.
Tips for a successful journey:
* Sit in an “open body” position, with arms & legs uncrossed, spine straight but not stiff.
* Distracting thoughts are normal, especially at first. Don’t beat yourself up or think that you are doing this “wrong.” Just gently bring your awareness back to the guiding voice on the recording. It will let you know when to close eyes, when to open them, etc.
* If you are mentally stuck on some sort of “to-do list”, just visualize a shelf next to your chair, and put all your “to-do” items down, knowing that you will get back to them later.
* When you get to your “perfect place in nature” the whole experience is something you design yourself. When the voice talks about reaching out and touching an object, it will be VERY helpful if you actually, physically reach your hands out and mime the action of touching and holding whatever object you have visualized. This really helps your subconscious mind accept it as real and make sense out of the experience. Later, this will serve as a trigger for you to return to a relaxed state, even if you don’t have time to sit down and chill out for 10 minutes.
* When you are done, and have returned your awareness to the room, take a few minutes to revisit the experience. Write about it, or tell a trusted friend about what happened and how it felt. Remember, you can go back any time you want.
