Get Out of My Life

Get Out of My Life

My favorite thing is the cigarette. It fills the gaps in trying to think. It relieves the stress and calms the nerves while seemly being enjoyable in its consumption. I had quit for a period of ten years and while I know that I should quit again I find that I really do not want to.

It is not the fact that I cannot stop but that I am peeved more by the intrusion on my individual rights- Why smokers are having all kinds of ludicrous laws passed against them: No smoking in restaurants, bars or any other public buildings. The state of New Hampshire is presently attempting to pass a bill, which will outlaw smoking while driving a motor vehicle. This is absolute discrimination. While you will not legally be able to smoke and drive you will be allowed to operate a motor vehicle while talking on your cell phone. I believe that people gabbing on the phone and not paying attention to the road is the cause of more accidents then smoking while driving.

Ok, we all know that smoking is bad for an individual’s health and second hand smoke is a hazard to nonsmokers, but I think the smoking ban has gone to far. Bars should be able to allow smoking because drinking is a potential health hazard and who has the right to swap me one hazard for another? Trying to extend my life is not going to help me in the future. I come from the working class and most of my retirement benefits were squandered away by companies that have gone bankrupt. Social security is most likely not going to be available by the time I become of age to receive the benefits, so why is it important for the government to keep me healthy? The government should be protecting my retirement and social security benefits then worry about my health. As I see it now, dying early will help out the government with its deficit.

Well I guess I can get some satisfaction in the end. I will have watched all these healthy nonsmokers die from using the cell phone while driving and getting skin cancer from to much exposure from the sun. This situation has peeved me even more as I write; I think I just might quit smoking to complain about all the stuff people and governments impose upon its citizens. But, first I need to contemplate the matter and have a cigarette.
