Get Yourself a Guitar and Learn How to Play (The Real One)

I know that everyone has different interests and hobbies, but I want to encourage everyone out there to give music a try at some point in your life. Make sure your children are exposed to it and have an opportunity and the necessary tools to learn an instrument and be able to feel the joy that comes from not just listening to music, but playing it yourself.

I play guitar and I cannot imagine not being a guitar player. I play every day despite the fact that I do not earn a living by doing it. It is a release; playing the guitar genuinely makes me feel better and helps me get through stressful days. And while playing songs on the guitar is fun and enlightening, there is no better feeling than the creation of music.

In a generation of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, I think it's important for parents to encourage their children to still pick up real instruments and not just the "play" ones. I've seen some children and adults play these games at the highest difficulty levels so well, and I've thought about how they almost could have learned the real thing as quick as they learned to do that. It's fun and it's still enjoying music; however, don't let it become a substitute for the real thing. Let's have more real guitars under the tree this year than fake ones.

I know everyone out there isn't predisposed to play an instrument or create music. There are plenty of people who just enjoy listening to good music and appreciating the creations of others. I'm just saying that no one out there should miss out because they did not have an opportunity, or no one encouraged them to give it a try.

Thanks for reading and Happy Holidays!

Get a Real Guitar

Yeah you are right...I actually don't have anything against the games... playing an instrument, especially guitar (I would know) takes a lot of dedication and time. I do believe that playing these games is still better than having no music in your life at all. I'm just trying to reach those parents who think guitar hero is a substitute for a child who really does want to learn. What if Jimi Hendrix had been a live today and been given "Guitar Hero" instead of the real thing??? One thing's for sure...he would have shredded the hell out of it... Merry Christmas!!

I play

I play as well and have played in a few bar bands back in my younger days. I would agree with you that learning to play music is a great thing. Problem is instant gratification. With Guitar Hero - yes I play the game - whithin minutes to hours you can play some kinda music. With an actual guitar it can takes days to months before you can even begin to play something sounding like music. Add to that - the pain. Until you build up some tough skin on your fingertips you'll find your little fee-foos begging for mercy. Thus the reason why everyone doesn't play - I know many, many kids that after one grueling session and waking up the next day not being able to touch anything with your left hand - quit. Kids need music!!

Guitar Hero: The Real Game

Remember in this stringent holiday season that while all of our kids may be fascinated with toys like Rock Band and Guitar Hero, they may have aptitudes toward the real thing. Put guitars in the hands of our children, and yes, they will be irritating. But yes, they will be forever worth it... And that is what it is all about...

It's Just an Observation

The games are quite fun to play, and it's not a knock on them...just want people to remember the real thing is quite enriching as well and should not be forgotten... Thanks for the comment... Bp

Anyone can play guitar

(to quote the old Radiohead song). I agree with you... for what some folks are spending on Guitar Hero and associated gizmos a person could buy a real guitar and actually learn how to play it.
