Getting Rid of Stretch Marks: Can It Be Done?

Unfortunately, after having a child or gaining and losing a lot of weight the majority of the population experience the horror of the dreaded stretch marks. Once we discover it has happened to us we want to go about getting rid of stretch marks.

Stretch marks (striae) are relatively common, even in males.  It is not completely understood how they form, but there are several theories. One is that stretch marks form simply when the skin is stretched to the point of breaking and a scar is formed. Another interesting theory is that stretch marks are caused by an increased level of glucocorticoids (cortisol).  Glucocorticoids prevent connective tissues from forming the collagen and elastin fibers needed to keep the skin tight, and dermal layer then tears. Some people may be more genetically prone to stretch marks than others.  Skin type may be a factor: Dryer skin has less elasticity than oily skin, and is more prone to stretch marks. Whatever your case, you might be facing whether to live with the difference in your body appearance or find a way to get rid of your stretch marks.

Stretch marks can be faded with cocoa butter cream and some other remedies, but to get rid of stretch marks you might have to resort to cosmetic surgery or laser treatment. It can be done. Just make sure you have the funds set aside in your budget because medical insurance does not cover this type of surgery.

Getting rid of stretch marks in the future would improve your appearance and possibly help your self esteem. However, stretch marks are not life threatening, so if you and your significant other are not affected by this change in your body, just wear a one-piece swim suit when you go swimming or enjoy the jacuzzi.
