The Glider Pouch

The Glider Pouch

Of all the things you can give your glider to entertain him and make him happy there is nothing more important that your glider's pouch. This little bag, not only serves both as his home within his home and a portable home as well when he travels with you, but it is his safe haven, and a means of entertainment.

Glider's love to play peek a boo peeking out of their pouch and checking to see if you are watching. My glider Gideon, even loves it when I place his pouch on my computer desk and he can from time to time peek out to watch my fingers fly across the keys. He has even been known to stick his head out call to me and then duck back in and wait for me to lift the flap before coming out to greet climb on me.

The pouch is so important to some glider's they become very pouch protective, not wanting anyone to intrude on this very private domain. I have a glider named Grrh that is the friendliest glider you could ever meet unless you put your hand into his pouch. He will then give you a warning hiss and if you are not fast enough removing your hand from his territory you will feel his wrath in the form a painful bite.

There is a reason that gliders tend to love their pouches so much. In the wild, gliders make their homes in trees, usually in small notches and holes where they are protected from predators. To glider's who are kept as pets, the pouch takes the place of the notch in the tree. Having only one entrance the pouch is easy to protect and gives them a sense of security they need so badly.

For a new owner of a sugar glider, the pouch can make the process of bonding much easier. Since your glider feels so protected and secure in his pouch, wearing that pouch for several hours a day allows a new glider to become use to your scent, and your voice while he is sleeping or otherwise feels safe.

Your scent penetrates the bag and in time, becomes a part of the gliders feeling of security. Therefore, he ventures forth from his pouch and smells your scent, he immediately recalls the security of the pouch and will bond much faster due to that association.

We all like the feeling of security and a glider is no different than a human in that respect. Keeping your glider supplied with pouches is therefore the single most important gift you can give your new pet.

Pet Sugar Gliders

I have seen sugar gliders at one of our local pet stores.  They look so cute but I didn't know a thing about them before reading your article.  Sounds like they make really good pets!  Do they prefer to have a buddy or do they do just as well by themselves?  When there is more than one, do they like to share a pouch or are they territorial about it and don't want to share with their fellow gliders?  They sound like lots of fun!

Great first article!  Can't wait to read more!
