Good News For Kevin Everett
posted September 12, 2007 - 6:20amThere is good news for Kevin Everett. Doctors say he might be able to walk again. He is showing some movement in his arms and legs. This is great news.
Keven fractured his spine at two areas. Cervical vertebrae 3 and 4 were both fractured. In short... he broke his neck.< p>
At this level in the spine the nerves come off the spinal chord that not only supply movement and feeling to the body, but that control body functions such as breathing. Injuries in the area can result in loss of function in any of those areas.
For the first three days after any injury the body responds with swelling as it rushes fluids to the wounded area to start healing.
Kevin is on medication to fight this swelling as swelling of the spinal chord can injure it.
Doctors found during surgery that the chord itself did not appear to be damaged. Neither was the cover of the chord damaged. There could still be internal damage of the chord from pressure, bruising or swelling. Only time will tell.
None the less, the slight movements he has had in his limbs is very, very encouraging and builds hope that he will be able control his arms and legs and to walk again.
