Google and Cuil
posted August 8, 2008 - 11:48pm All the net buffs know that there's a word 'Google'. And its a household name now. The search engine giant is probably the only one that strikes someone when searching on the net. And that's a great achievement in itself. Google is what all internet users - even non-users
for that matter - know and are quite aware of in this planet.
But the company might get some serious compitition and many a sleepless night. Its because 3 former Google employees - Anna Patterson, Russell Power and Louis Monier - have developed a search engine called Cuil.
Cuil boasts of 3 times more of a database as compared to Google's database. As of current reports (August 2008) Google has 40bn web pages in its database. Cuil on the other hand has - as it claims - 120 bn web pages. But Google had stopped publicising its index capacity almost 3 years ago, and then Google had 8bn odd web pages.
But Cuil have a formula of their own. They go deep into a web page's contents and the search results are displayed quite differently from that of Google's. Google's search results are like a 'vertical' arrangement with sidebars, where as Cuil's results are horizontal and they too use sidebars. Cuil's results are displayed in a 3 column format. They can be lessoned to 2 columns too. While you type in the search box some of the results get displayed in the top left corner of the screen.
Google is a giant of searches. Cuil is not even 10 days old(it was launched on 28/July/2008). To add to that Cuil has to surpass the likes of Microsoft, Yahoo and Google is there already before it can make a home in the minds of netizens.
