Google Stop Words--How to Avoid Those Pesky PSA's

Google Stop Words--How to Avoid Those Pesky PSA's

25
points

There are few things more frustrating than creating top-notch content, doing SEO optimization for Google AdSense, and finally making sure your article makes sense from the reader's perspective, only to find that you can't make any money from its publication.

As many of us who write regularly on Xomba and elsewhere on the Internet have found, there are certain words and phrases that seem to trigger those pesky PSA's or Public Service Announcements. What may be even more frustrating is that there seems to be neither rhyme nor reason as to what exactly the Google spiders flag as naughty words. Is it the word, combination of words, frequency of words, etc?

Compared to my early days of writing here, when my writing style tended to be more provocative to get more reads, I have moved towards more mainstream ideas in my style. You'd think that doing so would save me from PSA's, but NooOOOooo. I still get them myself. What to do. What to do.

Fortunately for you, dear readers, I have done a little research into the subject and am providing you with a couple of sites that not only list which words may trigger the PSA's, but also how to avoid them if you have your own blog or website. Without further ado:

Google AdSense "Stop Words"
This site lists a number of words that have been unofficially known to trigger the PSA's as well as suggestions on how to get around the Google spiders if you HAVE to include certain words.

How to Stop PSA's
Finding Stop Words
These pages list a number of words and phrases. Better yet, the second link allows you to cut-and-paste your article and the author's software will scan your article for possible Stop Words. You can try different words and combinations of words to not get pinched by the spiders.

There you have it. Since Google doesn't publish a list of Stop Words--something that would make all of our lives much easier--probably because the list changes all the time, we are forced to be more creative in response.

Writing content and getting paid is a wonderful way to make a living, even if we have to sometimes think outside of the box to do so.

It is very important read your article after you post it to make sure there are no PSAs.

This can sometimes take a few minutes after you post it.

I Gave It a '+,' Like I Would "The Satanic Verses"

Because my Buddhist wisdom tells me, 'Bow to the powerful.'

The Christianity in me wants to point out--however--that you're focusing wrong. Writers write. Ideally, we would get paid for writing.

That is not the case. This is an easy point to miss--that we get paid 'in order to justify the readers attracted to the writing of advertisers beside our writing' (not 'in order to justify the time spent "writing"')--but people ignore it and so I feel I must make it again and again.

I write because it's what I do. Maybe I originally started here for the money, but money's just extra.

Here's my plan: I'll bookmark this article and/or the links within it; but I'll only use it to 'refinish' my articles, not to change them in any drastic way. If 'staying true to this article' means deleting one of my own, my own wins.

Good point, Nick

Better to take a couple of minutes after the article has just been submitted than to chance losing some or all of its potential revenue to a PSA.

As well you should Mythman...

The focus should always be on being in a state of flow to get the best article out of your mind and onto the screen. If we write in fear of triggering a stop word, then we are blocking that flow and making our writing suffer.

I read an article about there being two phases to writing. The first is the actual writing. The second is editing. Checking for stop words is editing.

The Genius Easily Forgets that Simple Minds Only See 1 Side

"Eat this, and you are God." A simple mind sees that as 'false,' because the connection is not clear.

The Genius sees it as 'true,' if he knows what's actually happening. (*You* -choose- to eat/not-eat it). One is not God 'in order to be god,' one is God because one is!

I can't say that before my church, because the group-mind--though arguably complex--communicates in simple terms.

I just felt it was important to bring up the 'don't be all about money'-philosophy because a) the online-money-making idea cheapens 'money' (making 'a day's work' a lot more-difficult) and b) keeping in mind that the money's just an overflow from the marketplace makes it more-rewarding when you get it---instead of meat-&-potatoes, it's fish-&-chips lol

Like I said, I'm not here 'to make money'; I'm here to learn stuff. Money comes, and that's nice; or money doesn't come, and that's nice---not as nice as when it does come, but 'the fruit of the spirit is patience' (and several other non-money things).

Great article!!

It is always useful to know that kind of thing ahead of time before you find yourself in trouble.

It's always good to find a mixture between "writing whatever flows out of your head" and paying attention to the words that may trigger things you don't want.

I think when you know the words ahead of time, your brain eventually automatically tells you not to use them, thus never hampering the much needed flow to write a great article.

Debunking the Stop-Word Myth

Don't get me wrong; 'stop-words' are a distinct possibility, just like God ... the Xomba FAQs say more:
There are several reasons as to why the ads on your page may not be targeted. The most likely reason is that you have not provided enough content on your page for Google to target it properly. Other reasons may include a lack of advertisers for your subject matter, spelling or grammar issues and it may just be that Google has not processed the article yet (this can sometimes take up to 24 hours).

Google shows a public service announcement instead of ads when it believes the web page has violated its terms of service. You can find Google’s terms of service [online]

[jdubhub's] article deals with certain words that trigger your ads into becoming PSAs.

Like jdubhub said, 'stop-words' are only a probable explanation AFTER you've optimized your article (by feeding it into https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and making sure you really do use THOSE words).

alternate adverts to PSA

Interesting, however, adsense does allow for alternate adverts to be shown instead of their PSA's. Why doesn't Xomba use that option? In fact, we can all do so as it is our own adsense code that gets rotated into each article.

Google parties gone awry

Maybe Google used to have "Friday Afternoon Butt Bleaching Parties" to keep morale high, and had some bad experiences?

In any case, I've checked out those "stop words" Web sites and found them way to restrictive (and not accurate)... they tell you to not use words like die, death, cancer, etc., but these words are used every day on Xomba and elsewhere and do not generate PSAs.

My advice is to not worry too much about these so-called "stop words" -- unless you use words like p*rn, b**bs, etc (and apparently an*l) you're not going to have a problem.

Free SEO Resources's picture

Not worried about stop words

I've used most of them, if not all in context and never had any issues as long as they were relevant and not overused. This is actually the first time I have had a problem and I determined that it was the use in the TITLE and not context that has triggered the PSA. Just wanted to share that fact in case anyone else was going to post about 'butt bleaching!'

@IdLewiLd--Think "Church Bulletin"

I don't really 'believe in' stop-words ... there are several factors that might make a word into a "stop-word": no advertisers bidding on any of the words discerned to be 'key' to your article, any of the advertisers bidding on any of your discerned keywords also bidding NOT to be connected to one of your other keywords ... and a few words getting so 'un-bid-for' that G-Money decides to move 'pages using them' into a default 'non-zone.'

Alleged Google "stop words"

Those sites that are linked to here go WAY overboard, in my opinion... they say not to mention things like death, cancer, etc. as well as sexual/racy subjects.

I've done lots of articles as a medical writer and I can assure you that using words like death, cancer, etc. will NOT generate PSAs! I don't know where those sites got their info, or what their angle is, but they are far overblowing the matter of "stop words."

If you mention certain genitals or sexual acts or sex-related terms, yes, you WILL get PSAs. But think of how many times we've seen articles on Xomba concerning celebrity deaths and diseases, tips for dealing with sickness and disease, etc. that did NOT have PSAs.

Use common sense when writing, and you won't get PSAs. (Unless your define writing p0rn reviews as "common sense"!)

jdubhub's picture

That, I believe, has to do with keyword density

There are some words which are okay to write a few times within context in an article. However, if your article consists of a list of people you don't like and the various ways in which you'd like to snuff them, you will probably get PSA'd.

The problem is not always with "what" words are used, but "how" they're used.

"Stop words"

That one site qualifies its "advice" with so many "may"s, "could"s, etc. that there really seems no point in following what they say.

As it says (emphasis is theirs not mine):
"Here are a few suggested Stop-Words, which MAY prevent normal Adsense ads from being shown. ...

This adsense poison word list is pure webmaster speculation.

NONE of the words below are proven stop-words, but ALL the words have been mentioned by webmasters, as POSSIBLE AdSense stop words."

The three words on this site that stand out to me are: "pure webmaster speculation."

Joseph E Howard's picture

TITS, BOOBS, Breasts, kahoonas, The Experiment failed

and, even more than all producing PSAs, only on Xomba did I get PSAs. Over at Hub Pages where my article is also posted, there are no PSAs.

Perhaps Google could enlighten us

You are absolutely correct to say that "pure webmaster speculation" is the basis for many of their lists. Now, if Google would just come forward and tell us what words would trigger those PSA announcements, we could end all speculation and KNOW which words to avoid. They are loathe to do so for whatever reason and all we are left with is "pure webmaster speculation".
