Got Midges? More on the Bug that Ate Cleveland

The Internet is buzzing (sorry) with talk about the bugs that harassed the New York Yankees at last night's playoff game against the Cleveland Indians.

The flying insects were originally described as being mayflies, but the consensus now seems to be that they were in fact midges, harmless flying insects that are common around the Lake Erie area. (Cleveland's ballpark, Jacobs Field, is right next to the Lake.) Locals call the bugs Canadian soldiers.

If you'd like to learn more about midges, those flying insects that bugged the Yankees so much, here's a handy Midges Fact Sheet from Ohio State University.

While midges are harmless, the Yankees should be glad that the bugs were not biting midges... as the fact sheet notes, these insects, which are called "no-see-ums" because of their small size, will give you annoying bites. (I can personally attest to this.)
