Great Style? Or Just Oatmeal Cookies....

I was faced this morning with the same problem that I have every morning. ‘What should I wear to work?’ I took a page from February’s Vogue and chose a knee length, red tulle-infused circle skirt with a tucked-in ivory cardigan and a black camisole underneath. Black heels and gold earrings completed the look and off I went for a day in the ever-exciting world of accounting.

Now, I knew I was being rather fashion forward in my choice of garments. After all, I ripped the look off of a page from friggin Vogue magazine – the end all of fashion say so, yes? My work BFF, Michelle, of course told me that I looked pretty, as she does everyday. God bless her.

However, the comment of the day – I’m talking about the one that is still standing out in my mind – came from this man, this dear man, named Norbert. Norbert is from some unknown country in Europe. None of us have ever asked him precisely where he is from – we just know that he is European. My guess would be that he is from one of the Slavic nations, judging by his last name, which I will not reveal.

As I was standing at Michelle’s desk discussing some order of business for the day, Norbert glided over. Now, let me provide a visual. Norbert is a sweet 50-something man whose wardrobe is stuck in the mid-seventies. But wait. He’s playing golf in the mid-seventies. In Europe. Michelle and I love him. He is adorable. Plus, at the precise moment of which I am speaking, he was bringing us fresh baked oatmeal raisin cookies. So we love him even more in this moment.

Norbert says to me with his adorable European charm “My! What a dramatic dress you are wearing!”

And of course I try to be just as charming back to him. “Oh well yes. You know I do try!”

Now. My issue lies here. This plaid-panted man was THE one who commented on my Vogue-inspired outfit today. So I wonder….

Should I smile graciously (as I did) and chatter with him as I do on a day to day basis?

OR…..

Is he more fashion forward than I am? Do I need to begin reading FOREIGN issues of Vogue to keep up? Am I THAT out of the loop when I think I am actually abreast?

Believe me…nobody (maybe a FEW exceptions) in my company knows about skinny jeans, corset belts, ballet flats, leopard skin, or headbands. Is Norbert IN on this? Do I need to keep ahead of European fashion?

Or was it just a passing comment from a sweet, unsuspecting co-worker who just wanted to bring us oatmeal cookies?

Thank you Sue!

Congratulations to you too! I am so honored to be writing amongst such fresh minds! As far as Norbert, I wouldn't say his fashion sense is of the British band persuasion. I may have seen him in an oddly patterned sweater vest. But usually it is the pants that catch my attention. Oh the pants... Such peculiar patterns and colors. And his shoes always match them. Yesterday they were orange... He really is so very sweet though. With the most darling accent :-)

he may be on to something...

I am not kidding you - there are bands coming out of England right now that look like they are dressed for golf in the seventies. Please be more specific? has he worn a polka-dot vest? any vests at all? Does he ever look like he's wearing his granfather's clothes? Are his shoes polishable? If so...look out!!!! ps. Congrats on being the featured writer, I'm the FW of Music and Idlewild is FW of Health/Wellness. When I saw that you were the FW in fashion I was so happy. You are perfect for it!

you rock

I'm gonna recruit you when I get the "Survivethecity.com" website up and running again. You can still check it out though. Okay so 1) what do I wear the leg warmers with. It's one of those things that I'd like to pull off, but I feel like if I were faced with them I wouldn't know what else to put with it... explain upward. 2) I know what you mean about the tights... love 'em love 'em and I have a ton of them that I can now finally wear again. THe other day I wore black ones (patterned) with cute mary-jane type heels (but they're like MaryJane's with a modern kick to 'em) and a black above the knee skirt, a sweater and a scarf. I was lovin it. 3) agree with you about the layering and luckily I have some fab coats and scarfs. I'm sure I'll collect more. I like the dress layering idea. I'll have to readdress some of my dresses.. he he 4) ok so I bought these sweater boots from Delias (a young-chick store I'm sure you're familiar with. I don't often shop their except for a few things like their $10 cotton pants for sleeping in - well, in LA I could wear them out, but that's a different story) Anyway, sweater boots and I bought them in green just cause I was thinking, hey, green is different. http://store.delias.com/item.do?categoryID=506&itemID=45230&sizeFilter=&colorFilter=&brandFilter= no I'm not really sure what to do with them. I can't really wear the whole skinny jean or tucked in jean look very well. Draws attention to my hips and butt which I'd rather not. Anyway, I'm not sure what to do with them. Plus, I need to find a top that has that green it it. If you have any suggestions let me know. Lastly, most of my skirts are one of two kids - either the "business Anne-Taylor type knee length heavy material skirt or the cotton flowy (almost cheap looking as that whole LA look tends to be)... so I need to shop for new skirts - styles and prints that work here. Any suggestions on styles, colors and places to go that aren't rediculously expensive? Thanks for all your help. You Rock Heather

Oh Heather...

So many ideas...and I HEAR you about the cold. I'm on Long Island so I'm about 40 minutes from you. 1. Leg warmers. Black ones. From afar peole will not realize that they aren't boots. Up close, you look like you stepped off the Chanel runway. 2. If you are wearing a dress...tights tights tights. Forget pantyhose. Whoever invented them should perish. The bulkier, the better...textured, cable knit, thick fabrics...tights all the way. The only time you MUST wear hose is if your office requires it or you are meeting the Queen. 3. I am all about layering. All of my dresses (okay 97% of them)are sleeveless but I wear them all year long because of sweaters, cardigans, tunics, long-sleeve tees and again...tights. 4. Accesorize with a long scarf in lieu of a dangly necklace when it's really cold. 5. If you have combatted the morning vomits, coffee on the way to work ALWAYS warms me up. Stay warm, hun! This lasts till March!

More Please

He he...so cute. But back to the "what am I going to wear to work" issue. I so feel you on that one. Sometimes I can be so "fashion forward" as you say looking cute and feeling oh so good for the day and other times I'm like "what am I doing." Getting up and getting ready is tough enough, but to have to add in picking and repicking what to wear is the worst. Plus, I just moved to NYC from CA so I'm having to deal with the fact that 1) a pair of Citizen jeans and a cute T does not count as work attire and @) you can't throw on a cute cotton skirt and tank, plus some fun jewelry and hope to pass for "Career Woman" and 3) It's freakin cold. If you have any advice to make the mornings a bit easier...do tell. I like your idea about keeping vogue around. Smart.!! ~Heather www.xomba.com/xombyte/hlbroeker check out the featured Survive the City blogs
