Great Summer Mountain Bike Bicycling
posted May 24, 2009 - 10:00pmGerman engineer Baron Karl Dreiss von Sauerbronn is credited with inventing the first bicycle in 1817 made out of wood. His bicycle was first exhibited in Paris on April 6, 1818. It looked a lot like today’s modern cycle even if it was made out of wood, but it was missing pedals! It was powered instead by the operator's running feet. The bicycle improved during the 1890s, with the newly-invented safety bicycle with equal-size front and rear wheels making it easier to mount. Local bicycle shops, like the Wright Cycle Exchange in Dayton, Ohio, sprang up all over America. You remember the Wright brothers they invented the airplane.
Many of these early bicycle shops not only sold and repaired bicycles some even manufactured their own bicycles. Over the years, the bicycle was continually improved by adding rubber wheels, shock absorbers and brakes as well as gear shifters and lighter weight components.
