"Gunfight" (Written September 29, 2003)

One day there was a gunfight. The one gang hated the other gang. This gang, of whom we will view with a positive attitude, was known as the ‘Crazy Hats.' The rivals where the ‘Giggle-bats.'

The Giggle-bats are a crazy bunch. You see, they like to laugh at people before they attack them. They also carry little, tiny bats. These bats are so small that they can't be used for anything. Sadly, though, they are too big to put on a key chain. But that isn't important.

The Crazy Hats were known for their hats, which were quite crazy. Not one single hat was the same as another; somewhat like a snowflake. They were often adorned by bright colors and little trinkets. Sometimes the trinkets even included little, tiny bats that were so small they couldn't be used for anything.

Back to the gunfight.

On this day, the Crazy Hats and the Giggle-Bats met in the center of a big field. The rules set by the gang leaders were as follows: you can only use guns. It's a gunfight.

When the Crazy Hats were getting ready for the gunfight, it was discovered that all the guns were missing. Instead the gang members found seventeen knives.

"We can't be having this," yelled one of the Crazy Hats.

"We can't bring knives to a gunfight!"

Everyone in the gang quickly began searching for the missing guns. Their search was futile, though, for the Crazy Hats are also known for giving up really easily. So, before they had even looked for 10 minutes, they all gave up.

After a short rest, the gang decided to bring the knives instead of the missing guns.

On the way to the place where the gunfight was scheduled, the Crazy Hats marched. Slowly, ever so slowly, a trail of knives began to form behind the men. You see, the gang members were getting progressively more nervous about the gunfight. Inside each of them lurked a brooding thought: you can't bring a knife to a gunfight; it is against the rules.

Eventually the Crazy Hats made it to the field. Their rival gang wasn't there yet, so they waited. The time drew on, and more and more of the Crazy Hats began to doubt the knives in their hands.

Before long, a noise was heard I the distance. It grew louder until it was distinguishable as laughter. The Giggle-Bats were coming.

The laughter grew louder, and a mass of people was seen in the distance.

The now trembling Crazy Hats couldn't stand it any longer. Almost as if by signal, they leapt from the field. In an instant they had scattered.

All but one. A young boy, who was a new recruit to the Crazy Hats. He hadn't learned the rules of a gun fight, and didn't realize the strangeness of bringing knives.

This one boy, being new to gunfights, and thinking the scattering of his fellow gang members some sort of battle tactic, stood strong. He lifted his knife up above his head. The winter sun shimmered off its metallic surface, hitting the Giggle-Bat's eyes.

Seeing this boy, who brought a knife to a gunfight, standing alone as he did, the Giggle-Bats began to laugh even louder.

You see, the Giggle-Bats had a little secret: They where the ones who replaced the guns of the Crazy Hats with knives.

They knew that the Crazy Hats would surrender if they were forced to bring knives to the gunfight. It was an unstoppable plan.

The boy still stood where he did, and the Giggle-Bats still laughed before him.

The strange thing is that the Giggle-Bats never once tried to attack him. Instead they just watched and waited. The laughed at first, but after an hour or so of standing there, the gang lost its humor, and looked quite bored.

The boy, however, stood strong, his knife held high.

When the sun started to dim, and the streetlights were being lit, the Giggle-Bats slowly started to leave.

When they were all gone, the boy took one last look around the field. He had to make sure he was the last. When he was sure he was alone, the boy let his arm drop, and put the knife away.

He went back to the home of the Crazy Hats to proclaim his defeat over the Giggle-Bats.
