jdubhub is...the Birthday Boy

Normally, I would rather fly under the radar for this event, but I have found it useful to review my past year on this planet and think about what I want to accomplish during the next. That's why I don't participate in New Year's resolutions--I have two more weeks until I "need" to commit to something.

For those who don't know, since I know you will click my profile anyway, I am now officially 41 years of age. I am probably older than most Xombies, although not in the oldest bracket certainly.

What has happened with me during my 40th year? I have learned political tolerance to the point where I no longer feel the need to debate other people over differing views for no other reason than I believe their views are "wrong". No, the rancor and acrimony over the 2008 presidential election taught me that there are better things to do with my time than engage in political virtual warfare.

Looking back, also, I wrote some of my best articles to date. My article on How Much Money Do You Want to Make Today? was voted by my peers as one of the best Xombytes of 2008. I was also selected for the first class of the Xomba Hall of Fame.

These are well and good, but I am not going to rest on my laurels. During my 41st year on the planet, I am going to exceed past expectations. I already have a plan in place to be a better father and husband for my immediate family and to be a more supportive member of my extended Xomba family. In the case of Xomba, I have a whole series of articles planned on what we can do to make our lives and those in them more meaningful in the Big Picture.

If I were to pick a theme for my goals for my 41st year, it is SERVICE. Service to my Greatest Good and Service to others, including the success of everyone here on Xomba from Nick all the way to the newest Xombie. Point being, I am being the change I want to see in the world.

Thank you for reading my birthday greeting! Won't you join me in toasting our future success?

EDIT: For those of you who do read my profile page, I am going to be rewriting it this week to reflect who I am today. I realize that much of it is dated now.

I believe being in the "now" is the healthiest

If you are looking for a book to really make you think about being in the "now", I recommend Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now. My wife listens to the book-on-CD while she commutes to work every day and I use the day planner, which features quotes from the book in addition to actually reading the book. There are times, of course, when past reflection and future planning are necessary, but the best we can do for ourselves and for those around us is to be present as much as possible. Some aspects of aging are more of a myth, Hellcat

I am studying it now, but I am learning that many of the things that are normally associated with advanced age, such as memory loss and joint stiffness, can be prevented and even reversed by doing something about it. That's why I don't mind my chronological age increasing--I am working right now to stave off things that most people would otherwise dread about aging. It's good to have a lifeplan with annual goals to chart progress. There is an old quote by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr in his book Cat's Cradle, "Of all the words of mice and men the saddest are 'what might have been'" The easiest way to not feel like saying those words is to have goals and work toward something in life. older and wiser in a different way

Not to belabor your birthday, but I have a different perspective on the “older but wiser” idea than you do. I believe that the older one gets, the more you realize how little you, or anyone else, understands about existence. Your personal B.S. meter goes off more—at least mine does. And the wisdom you gain with age lies in realizing that you don’t, and never will, understand very much. There’s nothing mystical about it, in my view. It’s just that our brains at their present level of evolutionary development can’t process it all. I have a ton of photos from my childhood—this was before cell phone and digital cameras made taking pictures so easy, I just happened to have an uncle who was a photographer—anyway, I look at them from time to time and remember some of the events behind them, and I think to myself, wow, that feels like it happened four lifetimes ago. Was I ever that young and cute? So time as I experience it is really a paradox: my childhood seems far, far away at the same time that my life feels like it’s flown by. I have a theory that time telescopes (gets faster) as you get older if you don’t settle down into a fairly routine life, which I definitely didn’t. Most of my life has been unsettled, disjointed and meandering, and I’ve only put down roots in the last dozen years. My sense is that if there’s a lot of change in your life, it seems to go by faster. In contrast, if you’re sitting in one place, with one job and maybe raising kids, for thirty or forty years, time seems to slow down. But not much! Anyway, I’m no physicist, but I’m fascinated by time and its relativity, and how we in this galaxy are absolutely ruled by it, even though it can be transcended and we can go backwards and forwards in time if we travel faster than the speed of light—or even if we just indulge in remembering our pasts or contemplating our futures.

Yaaaay. Happy B'Day, Jdub ^_^

Age is something I've been thinking quite abit about recently - it's one of the things that scare me the most in the whole world; I have a vibe that the soul is willing but the flesh is becoming weaker and weaker. However, more frightening than this is the fact that the mind/brain slows down, things are forgotten, neural pathways become dormant. Okay, I'm sorry! I'll stop there. Don't panic. Getting back to your article; - it's only now that I'm taking the idea of a yearly 'action' plan seriously. Mine is nearly finished and I can't wait to see if I meet all of the challenges I've set for myself - it must feel great when, at the end of the year, you're able to look at it and go "yup, I've done that....and that....and that..." Best wishes for the coming year :) Subscribe to XHellcatX's Xombytes

Funny you should say that, veghead...

One of my best friends from school, who was born ten days after me, and I were having a discussion after we both turned 21. When you're in school, you can't wait to turn 18 and be an "adult". When you turn 18, you can't wait to turn 21 and be "legal" for alcohol. What happens after 21? Age 25 is generally when insurance rates will drop for most drivers. Age 30 is when you are a "real" adult. After that, it is a progressive acceleration until you hit 65 and retirement. That was from a 21-year-old's perspective, mind you, when anything past 30 was "way out there." Now that I am "way out there", time does seem to have flown by. I don't really feel any older than I did back then, but I have a greater wisdom from just living. That's what I find interesting. I'm starting to understand where "older and wiser" fits into all of this. JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

Thanks, Rycharde, it's a good time to be 40-something!

I'm actually starting to like being in my 40's. One of the things I have to thank for my genetics is being prematurely gray on top. My head hair still retains much of its natural color, but my beard (I grew it out full from the Van Dyke I have in my profile photo) is mostly gray. When I was in my 30's I felt a sense of needing to keep it colored using Just for Men products. Now, I don't even worry about it. The rest of my face still retains a youthful appearance and that's what matters. Thanks for your comment! JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

It only goes faster after 40

41 seems like just last year to me. Now I'm practically 60 and I have no idea how I got here, since I still feel about 14! (Actually, I'm lucky I'm still walking the planet, but that's another story). Yup, 1968 was one of those years for the ages. I remember it well, personally and historically.

This seems to have flown up

This seems to have flown up the xomba charts as I've been asleep! And as you can see, jdubhub, you are by no means alone in being in your 40s. Happy Birthday!! Join Xomba Here

Twas great, rawnak

I had a comparatively quiet dinner at a steakhouse with my family. Maybe when I hit 50 I will celebrate with a little more fanfare, but I'm not one for big parties anymore. It probably helps that my soon-to-be four year old son has his birthday less than a week after mine--I can keep the focus on him. Thanks for your comment! JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

I was born into MLK, RFK, Tet, Summer of Love, and Chicago Riots

Let's not forget the Prague Summer, too. Yep, 1968 was a pretty tumultuous time for a person to be born. My dad was stationed in the Fulda Gap in West Germany when I was born and my brother in 1969 before being transferred back Stateside and on to Viet Nam. There was a lot going on in the world when I was born and it definitely hasn't gotten much quieter! Yeah, I know that I am a comparatively young pup but I look at the teens and tweens of today and wonder where the time went sometimes. Thanks for your comment!
