Happy Every Day: It’s Time To Celebrate the Fourth of July

Why do we have to wait for special holidays to celebrate the miracle of life? Isn’t it time we started to appreciate how much we have to be happy for every day of our lives?

It seems to me that many of us are taking the bounty of our lives for granted. We spend so much time wishing for more that we forget how much we already have.

We take for granted things like:

Good Health

A Loving Family

The Blessings of God

The Miracle of Our Faith

The Beauty All Around Us

Our Ability To Think and Reason

The Wonders of The World We Live In

Our Beliefs and Our Passions

The Kindness of Strangers

Our God Given Souls

The Miracle of Life Itself

The list could go on and on. Maybe you can think of some things that I have forgotten that we take for granted. Maybe you can help others become more aware of their surroundings and their blessings.

Don’t waste your time thinking about the bad things that have happened in your life. It won’t make them go away any sooner. It won’t make you happier. It will distract you from concentrating on all the good things you have to celebrate.

Concentrate on the positive. Having a positive attitude will help you be happier. Believe in a good future for yourself and your family and your chances of having one will improve dramatically. Have faith in yourself and your ability to be a force for good. Believe in God and all He has given us.

Isn’t it time we took the time to celebrate our lives by trying harder to make something more constructive of them. Perhaps that’s what the celebration should be all about: Our ability to try and do better, our passion to discover more of the meaning of life, and our ability to be thinking and kind human beings.

What a wonderful world this is for us to live and love and work in. Doesn’t it make you want to celebrate your existence every day of the year?

If I hijacked your thread, I apologize. My original intent was to show how far the US has fallen from the high ideals set forth by our Founding Fathers, which is what we are really honoring on Independence Day. For me, Independence Day is a political holiday to take pause and reflect on the wisdom of our Founding Fathers and the origins of the Constitution. I do the other stuff in your article on the last Thursday in November. Others mileage may differ.

Arthur, I'd suggest Ms. Hilton is another kind of alien, an alien life form. (Though not exactly like that one on ALF.) Maybe we should put her on the next mission to the international space station so she can be closer to her family of origin. Sorry your discussion got sidetracked, but comments in Xomba often take on a life of their own after the original posting, as you've no doubt seen! Back to your original point, I definitely have a lot to be thankful for. And Paris Hilton is actually an example of how a person with no talent and not much brainpower can achieve success (starting with a trust fund helps, of course, but there are many real rags-to-riches stories in the U.S.)

Independence Day

  1. Indepence Day is a political holiday, so political discussions regarding our country are probably the most appropriate topic of discussion that day.
  2. There is no true freedom of speech in the US for everyone, which negates the equal protection clause of the Constitution. If you are a straight white Anglo-Saxon male and you have something negative to say about anyone not a straight white Anglo-Saxon male--no matter how truthful--you are called a racist, hater, bigot, misogynist, or worse. However, anyone not a straight white Anglo-Saxon male can say whatever they want about straight white Anglo-Saxon males and get away with it regardless of it being blatantly false or a threat of violence.
  3. If this were still a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people", we would not be sending American men and women over to Iraq and Afghanistan (and soon, Iran) to die for something our "elected" leaders never had the brass to do themselves and darn well wouldn't send their own sons and daughters to do.

More on immigration

"Over 70% of the American people are against illegal immigration and believe that the illegals should go back to Mexico. " If that survey is correct, I'm surprised that 90% of people aren't against illegal immigration. In fact, most people are probably against most illegal activities. It all depends on who's giving the survey, who they're asking, what questions they're asking, and how they're asking them. I've heard a study that 60% of Americans support one of the main goals of the immigration bill, i.e., a provision to let illegals now in the country stay here, if they meet certain conditions. It also depends on when the survey is being conducted. Take a survey after a big drug bust or after an illegal commits murder, and the anti-immigrant sentiment will go way up, if only temporarily. Many but not all illegals are from Mexico. "...todays government, which has become a Leviathan completely out of touch with its constituency" That constituency knows and cares more about American Idol and Paris Hilton than they do about most world or national affairs, such as who their Congressman is. Fewer than 50% of eligible voters do so. Elected officials do pay attention to votes, calls from constituents, etc., unfortunately too few people take the time or interest to do so. You're not going to get a better, more effective government until and unless citizens start paying attention and letting their officials know what they want. Not to say this will solve every problem; even countries with 80% voter turnout have corruption, scandals, etc. But officials will be on better behavior if they know people are actually paying attention.

The best thing America has going for it are the many types of people who all try to work together without killing each other. It is hard to imagine a world where people were killed for the color of their skin, religion or political beliefs. It is very easy for us to say how bad the world is, but if you look back just several hundred years ago life was much more dangerous. I think that is something 99% of us can agree on. No one wants to go back and live out the 17th century again or the 19th for that matter.
