Shiny silver pods floating across the sky!?
posted March 13, 2007 - 2:24amDoes this strike you as futuristic? Have the Jetson's become a reality? A shiny silver pod that floats across the sky in a metropolitan city as a form of public transportation. That shiny silver pod is none other than an aerial tram located in Portland, Oregon. The portland aerial tram< a> was built by Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) and the city of Portland to assist with transportation between the newly developed South Waterfront district and "pill hill," the hill that houses the OHSU hospital and medical professions campus, the Portland VA, and Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
There are two of these shiny silver pods, known as tram cars. Each car can carry 78 people and travel 3,300 linear feet at around 22 miles per hour. That means about a 3 minute ride. Patients, employees, students, and the public all ride these Jetson's like contraptions, around 5,000 daily, as a new form of mass transit.
Pretty cool if you ask me.
