HBO Chief Resigns After Impersonating Celebrity Hijinks
posted May 10, 2007 - 10:21pmMovie stars and sports celebrities aren't the only people losing their jobs because of bad behavior. Yesterday Time Warner announced that HBO chief executive Chris Albrecht was resigning three days after he was arrested and charged for assaulting a female companion in a parking lot in Las Vegas. (It seems that what happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas, if it's a felony.)
Albrecht, the chairman and CEO of the network that produces such hits as The Sopranos, had announced the day before that he was taking a leave of absence in the wake of his arrest. On Monday he sent a memo to colleagues stating that he was an alcoholic and the the incident (of which he didn't give specifics) resulted from a lapse in his sobriety (yeah, Lindsay Lohan can relate!)
Las Vegas police said the incident took place around 3 a.m. Sunday in a hotel parking area. The area was the site of a championship bout between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. HBO had broadcast the fight; maybe Albrecht thought he'd try a few boxing moves on his girlfriend? Now word on whether Gil Grissom and his dogged team of CSIs were involved in the case. But Las Vegas police have denied speculation that Mr. Albrecht is the Miniature Killer.
As with high-profile celebs, it seems the Vegas parking-lot assault wasn't Albrecht's first serious run-in with the law. On the day he resigned, the Los Angeles Times reported that in 1991 HBO had paid a hefty settlement--of at least $400,000--to a subordinate of Albrecht's with whom he had been romantically involved, after the woman accused Albrecht of trying to choke her during a confrontation in her office. Maybe someone needs a little anger management course, or a bit of therapy? Maybe Mr. Albrecht could talk to Tony Soprano and see if Dr. Melfi could clear her schedule for a few sessions with Mr. Albrecht.
Albrecht's lawyer referred questions to Albrecht's PR firm. It must be nice to tell the media to have their people talk to your people to talk to their other people...
The woman Albrecht allegedly tried to choke was a senior VP of HBO Independent Pictures (of which Albrecht was then president), and the L.A. Times said that the payment had been made to her in connection with her leaving HBO.
Hey, I'd take $400,000 if a boss of mine took a swing at me!
