Health Care Reform & Doctors Caught in the Middle: MSNBC
posted October 29, 2009 - 9:11amThe title of a recently MSNBC article is "In overhaul debate, doctors' LOBBY in tricky spot". The "doctor's lobby" is obviously a special interest group.
Key sentences include: "It's LOST IT'S PRINCIPLES, some lawmakers and physicians say. Perhaps more damaging: IT CAN'T PRODUCE VOTES". In other words, there are ethical ("It's lost its principles") as well as political and therefore, psychological consequences ("It can't produce votes").
"After a HUMILIATING defeat in the Senate, the American Medical Association FACES A REVOLT FROM ITS MEMBER DOCTORS AND ONE-TIME POLITICAL ALLIES as it STRUGGLES to influence an overhaul of the nation's health system". "humiliating", "faces a revolt" and "struggles" all have very negative connotations.
According to Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn, "I CAN'T THINK OF A MORE INEFFECTIVE ORGANIZATION when it comes to dealing with Congress" (other than the AMA). The lesson I've learned is...if you agree to fix their compensation, THEY WILL BASICALLY GET IN THE TANK WITH THEIR NATURAL ADVERSARIES", or, in more plain lingo, find more ways to take advantage of the situation.
According to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, "I had been told" that there had been several GOP votes when in fact there were none.
The next step, of course, is to figure out what doctors are saying and thinking. According to Dr. Cecil Wilson, the American Medical Association's (AMA) president-elect, "We deliberately chose a strategy which said (that) the best way for us to get health system reform in this country was for us to PROVIDE CONSTRUCTIVELY LEADERSHIP (and) TO WORK WITH THE PEOPLE WRITING THE LEGISLATION AS WELL AS THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION".
According to Bob Feldtman, a cardiovascular surgeon in Dallas, "The AMA is not as strong as they think they are - that's the bottom line. IT'S A SELLOUT TO WHATEVER THE OBAMA PLAN IS. And the truth is, WE DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT PLAN IS GOING TO BE". This is obviously strongly negative.
Finally, according to former AMA president Dr. Donald Palmisano, "You always gain respect when you take a position ON PRINCIPLE and don't try to do WHAT'S POLITICALLY EXPEDIENT FOR A SHORT-TERM GAIN. You ALWAYS lose it when you don't. THE SHORT-TERM PROMISE OF GETTING MORE MONEY WITHOUT GETTING ANY PROMISE OF REFORM IS NOT A VICTORY (boy, this sounds like Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who is only a doctor ON TV)". Whoever becomes a doctor for the money is clearly in the wrong profession.
So, what can we conclude after all that dialogue? DOCTORS' OPINIONS OF OBAMA'S HEALTH CARE REFORM PROPOSAL ARE ALL OVER THE BOARD, JUST LIKE THE OPINIONS ON CAPITOL HILL.
