Health insurance and medical bills: What if you don't have heatlh insurance?
posted March 8, 2009 - 9:17pmYou have caught by surprise and now you're in the hospital. Your hospital bill is over $20,000 and you don't know what to do. You don't have insurance and you don't have any savings. What will happen to your case? Will you get treatment if you don't have insurance or
medicare?
All of these are a concern to all of those that don't have medical insurance and this is a high percentage of the population. Most people don't have medical insurance because they can't afford it and their jobs don't offer benefits or they're didn't qualify. This is a common case with many people in this day and age. Buying your own insurance is a bit costly when you have so many other bills too. People don't really use their medical insurance except once in a blue moon.
Many family don't have any types of medical insurance and they usually pay out of their own pockets or owe it to the hospital. Many people have ruin their credit this way. It's very common nowadays with the shocking rate of healthcare. A visit to the doctor would cost you about $300-400 dollars just for one checkup and prescription when people only make about this much per week. Many people who work part time or are retired don't receive more than $400 per week. They would then give up their entire week of salary for one doctor visit. Sometimes $400 is minor, a visit to the dentist would cost you about several thousands if you have serious problems.
What can you do to improve this situation? If you're an elderly and qualify for medicare then you should apply for it. Medicare will cover most of your basic needs. You can also be included in your spouse insurance policy and use their insurance policy. You can try to apply for government health care plan that are designed for low income individuals. They do have many of these programs available. If you have a disability you can get your hospital bills waived by applying to the programs that the hospital offer. You will need to do this in a timely manner in order for it to be effective. If you have a disability and you don't work then you would definitely qualify for some of the programs that are available made by the government.
There are a lot of private insurance company that will sell to you a discount family package that you can afford. They come as a comprehensive plan with dental, medical, and vision. The plan is affordable. I would recommend this for people who are ill often and need medical attention on a
monthly basis. For those that never get sick can hold off for awhile until they get their benefits from work. There are people that only need insurance when they get into an accident and injure themselves and there are people that get sick or is sick for the long term such as living with bipolar. These individuals would need to visit the doctor often and get medicine prescription often. These are the ones that need medical insurance. It's good to have dental and medical insurance overall so that you can care for yourself more.
What if you're in the hospital and you don't have insurance? Your treatment will be delay if you don't have it. You can get worse because the doctor won't see you right away. You can try a state hospital where it's there for people of low income and you can apply to governmental programs to waive your bills. You should find out the state hospital nearest where you live because it's beneficial to you. If you go to a private doctor and you need help but don't have insurance then you won't be seen unless you can pay with cash. This is a private doctor office whereas in the state hospital you will be treated and be billed later. If you can't afford it at all then you can let it go into collection and eventually be written off but you will have bad credit. You should try to get medical insurance if you really need it. This can be at work or a private plan.
