Senior Year

Time flew by that morning for Danique, she scarcely remembered her morning classes. All she could think about was the events that had transpired early that morning. She replayed the events over and over in no particular order: the police running in; the look on the doctor’s face as he approached her; the conversation she had with Jill; the look on her mom’s face when she was thrown out of the detective’s office; and finally the way her daddy cried for her. The next thing she knew she was standing in the lunch line facing a verbal assault by her “best friend” Brooke “Rook” Lewis. Something Brooke had said had popped her back into the moment.

Danique:
“Wait, wait, what did you just say?”

Brooke:
“Yeah, I thought that would bring you around. I said Shane is putting feelers out about you. I think he wants to ask you out.”

Danique:
“Did he ask you to ask me if I’d go out with him?”

Brooke:
“No, his friend Robert is doing the dirty work”

Danique:
“You have to be fuckin’ kiddin’ me! What a cowardly piece of shit. This is the same jackass that sees it as his personal mission to make fun of everyone who doesn’t kiss his ass and tell him how cool, funny and cute he is? Why does he think that I would have anything to do with his dumb ass?”

Brooke:
“Well, I might have told Robert about a week ago that you thought Shane was cute.”

Danique:
“I never said any such thing Rook. I can’t believe you. As a matter of fact I think I remember you saying he was cute and that I told you that you were fuckin’ crazy.”

Brooke:
“Yeah, I guess that is how it went. Hey look, I’m sorry. I thought you might like to go out with him. I know he isn’t your type but, Jesus, Dan you’ve never been out with anyone. Everyone is beginning to think we are “leses” and you don’t need that stigma and neither do I. Besides if you go out with him once that could open the flood gates.”

Danique:
“Rook you should be the one who is in therapy because your damn nuts.”

Brooke:
“That’s probably true but, you have not answered the question put to you.”

Danique:
“And what is that?”

Brooke:
“If he balls up and asks you out, would you give him a chance?”

Danique:
“Sorry, Rook he is not my type.”

Brooke:
“You don’t know that. You’ve never even talked to him. And don’t put on this high and mighty with me young lady. I’ve seen the way you look at him when we pass him in the hall.”

Danique:
“I’m sorry Rook but, no I wouldn’t be able to live with myself afterward.”

Brooke:
“Come on Dan, just give him a chance. One date. C’mon you two will make such a cute couple.”

Brooke raises her eyebrows and giggles a little bit. Seems as if Brooke still has some little girl left in her.

Danique:
“I’ll tell you what. If he mans up and asks me himself, I might, if I’m in a good mood.”

Danique, releasing her in 13 year old as well, giggles as she walks away.

The two “best friends” part ways and walk towards their next class. Now Shane Whitehall has overtaken the morning’s events in Danique’s mind. She has many things to sort through in her mind least of which is: what is her true feelings towards Shane. Brooke is right – she does look at him and she likes what she sees. Danique knows he’s no Romeo but, there’s something. Maybe something sexual. Maybe something hideous like the suicide you’d like to see until you see it. In any case she decided she would give this guy a try. What was the worst that could happen?
